Cafe Y Pan De Vida. It's not a cafe. It's actually a lonely taco truck that's usually parked on 89th Avenue, about two blocks from the library. I was actually pleasantly surprised by the lengua, not as much by the carne.
Maima's is good, but not exactly around the corner. If you have wheels, you could be there in 5-10 minutes, and get take-out in enough time to get back in 30 minutes. Next door to the fish market, a stone's throw from the bus station, is a storefront that will make you a fried whiting sandwich on whole wheat. I'm pretty sure it's on the corner of 165th St and 89th Avenue. Has a name like YL Fish, something like that. It didn't make me forget Harlem's Taste of Seafood, but it satisfied my jones for fried fish on a hot summer day last August.

I'll be on foot, so Maima's might have to wait. Taco trucks, Jamaican patties and fish sandwiches sound mighty good though. Thanks.
I'll be sure to report anything else I stumble across.

I think there are a couple of South Asian places on Hillside 3-4 blocks from Merrick that were well reviewed here in the past - one I think is called GHOREA.

Have you been to Margherita Pizza yet? It could be the best slice in NYC-- seriously.

"t could be the best slice in NYC-- seriously."
I can't agree. I've been to Margarita a few times over the years and, while I'm glad this old school joint has survived amidst the strip-malling of Jamaica Avenue, I don't think it's even in contention. They keep the fresh pies coming out - I'll give them that - and they get tons of foot traffic, but their slice is easily the greasiest I've ever had in my life. A deep pool of oil rises up like a reservoir with each fold of the slice. Again, this is based on more than one visit over a period of years.
The "best slice in NYC" would merit going out of one's way. I hit Margherita every now and then, when I'm in the neighborhood - albeit the other options are mostly fast food for several blocks in either direction - but I would never recommend that someone go out of their way for this slice.
