Many thanks to those who recommended great places for coffee in the city.
I'll be joined on vacation with my vegetarian daughter and would appreciaite recommendations on vegetarian or restaurants which include good vegetarian food on a varied menu.
Cheers,
Gordon

Red Lentil, Veggie Planet and Oleanna would be my recommendations.

Tacking on to that list, True Bistro in Teele Square and Pulse Cafe in Davis are a pair of vegan restaurants in Somerville (the former is more upscale).

Mai Thai on Beach St in Chinatown and Grasshopper in Allston are Asian restaurants that are vegetarian and vegan (I think one of them might have condensed milk in one of their beverages).

Places that have good vegetarian food amongst meat/fish dishes are numerous including VeeVee in Jamaica Plain, Rendezvous in Cambridge, etc.

I like a good veggie joint, but Grasshopper is bland bordering on inedible.

        Red Lentil is amazing.

Agree about Grasshopper. Tried it a few times. Really wanted to like it. So bad..... :(

I am a vegetarian and I would NOT eat at Grasshopper!

I'd rather eat meat than eat there and I've been a vegetarian for years . . .

I found the food at Mai Thai (in the old Buddha's Delight space) disgusting, and most of the plates in the dining room showed lots of unfinished food. Anyone ever have anything decent there?

Haley House where Vegetarian Chef Didi Emmons presides is pretty wonderful. Many vegetarian choices.

Even though Haley House gets great posts (which I don't doubt!), a glance at the menu suggests that options are fairly limited for a vegetarian, outside of salad, veggie burger or plate-o-sides. The other suggestions, such as Red Lentil, Pulse and Veggie Planet offer a complete vegetarian menu with greater variety of choices.....a little more fun for us vegetarians. I might add Masao's Kitchen in Waltham, for a macrobiotic meal, if that appeals. However, it is a buffet, so much more casual. BTW, have not been to True Bistro, nor was I aware of it. It looks wonderful........can't wait to try!

Masao's Kitchen also has items to order also besides the buffet. He is an incredible chef, and though the place is small, it is very comfortable and peaceful.

There's also Life Alive in Central Sq. Bright, cheerful place with a full veggie/vegan menu.

While not a vegetarian place, Highland Kitchen in Somerville had plenty to offer everyone the other night. My veggie son loved the Buffalo Brussel sprouts, light-as-a-feather cheese fritters, and a delicious black bean burger with excellent guac.
On the other end of the spectrum, the bolognese and the catfish po boy were both excellent, so there's something for everyone.

Don't be constrained to veg only restaurants; most of the good higher end places will also offer decent options (except for the steak houses!). I'm vegetarian and feel no constraints when dining with friends in the city.

I'd also add EVOO and Bergamot to the list.

But also, keep in mind all of the cuisines that feature vegetarian food; I often take my vegetarian friends to places like Greek Corner, Maggiano's, Cafe Barada (Lebanese), Martsa on Elm (Tibetan), or Namaskar (Indian), and they eat happily and heartily.

I would also recommend Sofra in Cambridge/Belmont. Lots of tasty Mediterranean treats. The only problem is that it is too crowded.

Peace O' Pie next to Grasshopper is great for vegan pizza...delicious! They have gluten free crust too. The toppings are awesome.
I'm going to have to give Red Lentil another try. The only time I ordered there, the food was awful and incredibly bland. The menu looked so enticing, but I was really disappointed.

Red Lentil is possibly the best exclusively veggie resto I've ever eaten at. That said I don't go out of my way for veggie faire.

Good to know....I've heard so many good reviews of it, but was unimpressed. I must have hit them on an off day. I'll try again soon.

Just a warning, while the pizza is good, be ware that Peace o Pie uses pesto on every pizza (without telling you) which contains nuts if you or your daughter have a nut allergy. But I second the recommendation for Peace o Pie.
