Hey all,

Thinking of taking my girlfriend for some red meat satisfaction soon and thought Taylor's might fit the bill as it's not too expensive and I've read some good reviews on the board.

What's YOUR favorite thing to order there?

Excellent choice. Can't speak for any but the La Canada Taylors, but the much-hyped culotte was tough and not particularly tasty. The place didn't live up to the "advertised" reputation. The drinks were small, too.

I have been to the La Canada location several times and love it. I usually get the filet mignon or the special dinner steak. Both are excellent. Never tried the culotte. I took my brother & sister in law there last month and they can't stop raving about the place.

And IMO the drinks are more than fairly sized for the price. You pay $5 for a martini that would cost you $15 at Mastro's.

I've had a few memorable evenings at Taylors K-Town and maintain an overall favorable impression of the place. It's a warm destination at the end of a work week where a meal of fine steak and a cocktail amidst all that red leather feels especially like a well-earned reward. Though the last time I was there the meal truly sucked. Early Saturday pm dinner, ordered a much anticipated Rib Eye, (when you're jonesin' for a Rib Eye, nothing else will do). What I got was a New York, hands down. Mentioned the dubious provenance of the cut to our waitress and she insisted that, no she'd been to "meat school" and though this steak looked like a New York, it was most certainly a Rib Eye. "Cut into in a little more, it'll show some marbeling further in." So, halfway into the steak, it still quacked like a New York. Mentioned again to the waitress, who then grabbed the plate and removed to the kitchen, brings it back out and says, "the chef is sure this is a New York, but if you want to send it back.." all guilt-trippy-like. By this time my confrere had polished off a formerly handsome grilled prime rib, while my tortured and tusseled cut of controversial beef had long since failed to satisfy. Obviously no caring person seemed to be running the ship there at Taylors.. and here is probably my real concern with the place. If a surly, know-it-all waitress with no more grace or credential than claiming to have attended meat school, is running the show at Taylors, well you're sort of on your own. Roll the dice and it's likely the steak will be as advertised, but my experience has given me pause and sadly, I'm not likely to return on a whim, as before, without thinking twice.

hammy-
After many years of great steak dinners at Taylors, I had a similar experience. The owner was on the premises. He was as surly as the waitress and suggested that i find somewhere else to eat. I took his advice. Nothing will entice me to return to Taylors.

Yikes, that bad, huh? I am of the opinion that great service is many times just as important as the quality of food ...

This makes me rethink my desire to eat there.

I've never had a bad meal there. Sometimes they don't to well with fish(overcooked) but the fish and chips, broiled prawns and beer battered scallops(when they have them) are really good.
