Mezze in former Sona space

Went last night, and must say, this is the most interesting new restaurant in quite a while, with flavors not tasted in recent times, aka Turkish, Moroccan, Middle Eastern. Place was very busy, not crazy busy, because even at 8pm on a Saturday night, we secured a patio table, the patio and bar areas being reserved for walk-ins only.

Great wine list by the glass - did not look at the beer list, but it was decent length. Never offered a wine bottle list, but we managed...

You must like lamb, or this place has many reduced options, yet enough seafood, veal, and veggies to satisfy, just maybe not want to return on anything like a regular basis, which I do.

The merguez flatbread mezze reintroduced me to pizza that I want to eat.

The lamb risotto and Moroccan chicken wings were both sensationally tasty items not like any you might have ever eaten and would return for in about 30 minutes, full stomachs notwithstanding.

schwarma - oh so tasty, and oh so different, as in the dough is more bao-sized and shaped, yet bears no taste resemblance to whatsoever. The lamb filling is equally good.

Now by this time, I'm ready to bail as I have eaten plenty. Yet companion, ever the sweettooth, insists on a dessert, and thus the date/moscarpone parfait shows up - well, to say none of that remained behind was an understatement.

All in all, a superb meal, and with 2 glasses of syrah and pinot each, the bill totaled $122, plus tip. Micah Wexlar can really cook! And the staff could not be nicer in a very non-attitudinal kind of way, something unique these days.

Not cheap, yet oh so worth it.

As to the room, it will NEVER remind you of Sona other than by address. It was what Sona should have looked like, and then it might still be around. Nor any of Sona's predecessors like Cafe Europa, La Madrague, Tryst, or Mamagaya.

I liked it so well, I am returning this weekend for some really good mezze, and superb, yet unknown wines.
