Thinking of going to Porters in Federal Hill

foster Apr 3, 2011 10:26 AM

I read some favorable reviews of this 2010 re-engineered restaurant last summer & have been meaning to go try for myself. We are thinking of taking the parents out for a birthday dinner next week & this place came to mind. I have searched the board & the web a bit & cannot find much to go on about Porters besides the Gorelick review....

The menu looks good, for sure. Does anyone have any thing to share about the food, the service, and the idea of going on an early Saturday evening? Specifically, is it Meat Head Central?

Thanks for any help.

PS - We are also considering Ryleighs, but one parent does not like oysters, and the birthday boy would certainly hate a loud crowd.

I went to Porters several times under the old management, and while the food was never good, it was never meat head central either. Assuming it's getting the same neighborhood clientele as before it should be fine in that respect.

If you go report back and let us know how it was. I've been wondering.

I've been recently. My assessment was that it's pretty solid. Some of the food was just ok, some was good, none was terrible. Can't remember any trouble with the service-- I think it was pretty good. We went on a weeknight, so can't tell you much about what the environment would be like. I think they're on restaurant.com, if you want to save some money.

I haven't been to Porters in ages so no thoughts on the newish ownership but wanted to share that I've had several group meals w/ varied ages/dining pickiness at Ryleighs in the upstairs dining room. And, I think all went well and it was not too noisy even on a Saturday night. The steak sandwich is a big hit for my family.

Fair warning, the walk from your car along Cross St may be Meat Head central though...
