Moonlight Barbecue -- Owensboro KY
I recently bought a new car and was eager to get it out on the road. The weather was nice yesterday and I could not talk my daughter into a roadtrip to the Smokies for some hiking, so the second choice was a 3 hour drive from Lexington to Owensboro for barbecue.
I did not know barbecue buffets even existed, sounded like a great concept. The place is huge. We wondered if we could find our way back to the table from the buffet. Most of the tables were full but there was no wait at noon on Saturday.
The meats on the buffet were sliced pork, chopped pork, chopped beef, sliced mutton, and chopped mutton. Being from Kansas City I believe chopped beef is an abomination. It didn't really look good and I did not sample it. I have no idea if it was brisket or not. I did have the sliced pork and the sliced mutton. Again the chopped stuff did not look appealing. The sliced meat wasn't really sliced but what I would call pulled. Large chunks of smoked meat. We were a little disappointed to find that the buffet did not include ribs of any kind. Maybe that's just a lunch thing.
The pork didn't have a lot of smoke flavor but was pretty good and tender. There seemed to be a lot of fat on the pieces I took from the buffet. The mutton was leaner, and had good flavor. The flavor is pretty intense. I liked this a lot. Still there wasn't much smoke flavor. I've had the mutton at Bill's here in Lexington and it's every bit as good as Moonlight.
Sides: The ham and beans were delicious, the best thing we ate here. I really like them. They had something called dressing that looked like turkey and bread in gravy. It looked pretty starchy and I didn't try any. This is totally new to me but I was trying to save room for barbecue. The barbecued beans were not very good. Tasted like canned beans with ketchup in them. Green beans were cooked to much, i think they were canned and then cooked for hours. I like my green beans slow cooked and soft, but these were cooked to oblivion. Gizzards and livers were good. I have an anti-sweet tooth and did not sample any of the desserts. I was way too full anyway.
All in all C+ mostly for the buffet idea and the tasty mutton. Not sure I'll make another road trip out there though considering Billy's is so close.
I concur with your review of Moonlite. I have never eaten there, but ordered food from there. I am from Western Ky - living in WA and was haveing a Ky Derby Party. Probably should have know better than mail ordering BBQ. I ordered pork, mutton and burgoo. No flavor - I was embarassed - past two years I have made my own "cheater" pulled pork in my Crockpot. Much better that Moonlight (and I paid a fortune for it)!!
