Authentic Shanghai Restaurant?

We will be spending ten days in Houston and I am craving Shanghai cuisine (it is been a month since we left our favorite place in Chapel Hill, NC). Some of our favorites off the home menu are QianJiang Style Shredded Pork, Sautéed Shredded Pork with Garlic Stem, and Stir-Fried Tofu Skin with Potherb Mustard & Green Soy Bean.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

  1. I noticed on your Port Arthur post you're craving fried shrimp. Some of the best in Houston are at a near north side, 50's throwback restaurant called the Barbecue Inn. They also have great fried oysters, chicken fried steak, and fried chicken, but forget the bbq. As for Chinese, there is a huge Chinese/Vietnamese neighborhood on the west side out Bellaire Blvd. I'm sure other hiounds will cue you in on options.

Thanks James. Barbecue Inn has gone on the list of definites while in Houston--I love throwback restaurants. Also love fried oysters. I see there is a thread about the place I can read.

I will keep hoping on the Shanghai. I am familiar with Bellaire area but was overwhelmed with all the choice in restaurants? Will do some more research in that area.

I know that the Bellaire chinatown area has at least one place that specializes strictly in Shanghainese food -- I've eaten there a couple of times, but can not recall its name. It is in one of the strip malls, shopping centers on the north side of Bellaire, to the east of Beltway 8, also east of the strip center that has Hong Kong Food Street and Sinh Sinh. The restaurant's exterior signage was in Chinese, and it was in a section of the strip center that was built perpendicularly to Bellaire...

Sorry I can't come up with a name, but it has been a couple of years since I was last there.

    2. I can't help with the Shanghai cuisine either, but I will be watching for others' recs.

Meanwhile, I CAN vouch for JC's suggestion for fried shrimp at BBQ Inn. Awesome and a real throwback. Ask for Lily.

Thanks also DoobieWah. Two votes definitely makes BBQ Inn a keeper.

Try Peking Cuisine. Can't remember whether they are Shanghainese per se, but great food. Call ahead for the duck and reservation (they don't assume that you want both together).

If you're looking for dumplings, try Dumpling King (next to Arirang, on one side of 9889 Bellaire shopping complex, no signage in English). Also, I think it was HK Dumpling in the 9889 Bellaire complex which had an awesome lamb and squash dumpling. Fu Fu Cafe in the same complex is also quite good - one of the better dan dan mian(sp?) I've had in Houston.

Good suggestions. Turns out my daughter loves Peking Duck. I am also writing down your other suggestions. Lamb and squash dumpling sounds wonderful. I am starting to salivate. Thanks.

I have the business card from Peking Cuisine; on the back is the lunch menu which includes Shredded Pork in Garlic Sauce. I don't see the other dishes you mention but they may be on the full menu.

I've had some pretty good dan dan mien at China Sichuan Cuisine on Gessner @ Westpark but I don't see it on the menu at Fu Fu or HK Dim Sum. Where was this?

Anybody else know a place that serves it?

        2. I realize the OP is long gone but this seems the appropriate thread to append this information.

In the same center with Fu Fu and HK Dim Sum (9889 Bellaire), in fact right next door to HK Dim Sum, is a little hole in the wall that serves Shanghaiese, I think. When I first went there about 9 months ago, the name in the window was Friend's Kitchen. When I went there recently that name is still in the window but I noticed a sign on the building overhead which says Shanghai Cuisine yet the name on the menu and credit card receipt is My Friend's Home Restaurant. But they told Harry Parker of B4 the name of the restaurant hasn't changed! Well, it has. Seems when Robb Walsh visited the place in 2009 and wrote it up, it was called Shanghai Cuisine and was the first restaurant in Houston serving Shanghaiese dishes apparently. You will find reviews for it online under Friend's Kitchen and Shanghai Cuisine on different review sites. I have uploaded menu scans to Urbanspoon. B4 has it listed as Friend's Kitchen - Shandong cuisine. I don't know enough about Chinese to differentiate among those two specialties.

If you Google Shanghai Cuisine Houston you will also pull up a restaurant by that name at 9116 Bellaire, right next door to the highly regarded SIchuan Cuisine. That may be the one grbroderick referred to above since that is on the north side of Bellaire.

Now, I currently am on a tangent about Xiao Long Bao, aka steamed mini pork buns, aka little basket buns, aka soup dumplings, a Shanghai dish that was a really hot topic here on this board a couple of years ago. I"ve had the ones at Fu Fu and one other place and will be trying the ones at Friends and Shanghai Cuisine soon. If anybody knows of any other place serving them, let me know, please.
