Buckhead seems to be overwhelmed with big, corporate, high end dining options lately. You can always have a good meal at one of them (I have a weakness for Buckhead Diner and the Lobster Bar), but if you are looking for something smaller, with more character, here are my suggestions.
Buckhead: Anis Cafe, Portofino. Eclipse di Luna. Aria.
Brookhaven (just north of Buckhead on Peachtree Rd): Tierra Grill for lunch on their patio, Haven.
Virginia-Highlands: Murphy's, Surin of Thailand, George's or Yeah Burger for burgers.
Decatur: Watershed (go early Tues with reservations for the Southern fried chicken cooked in a cast iron skillet), Cakes and Ale, Iberian Pig, Leon's Full Service for cocktails/apps. Taqueria del Sol for $3 tacos that will blow your mind.
The additional appeal of Virginia-Highlands and Decatur is that you can park the car and walk to shops and restaurants and pubs. Two of the few walkable neighborhoods in Atlanta. Have a great time!-----

For Buckhead itself, I would recommend Bones and Kyma. One is a steakhouse (Bones) and the other is Greek.
As you have a car, I would recommend that you explore a little. Depending on your price sensitivity, you can go expensive to inexpensive.
Here are several of my favorites:
Bacchanalia - expensive, perhaps the best restaurant in the city.
Iberian Pig - On Decatur square. Spanish tapas style restaurant. A personal favorite and a 2 second walk from the Brickstore, which is an excellent Belgian style beer bar with a several hundred beer selection.
Antico Napoletana - very good pizza. Can be pricey for a pie but worth it.
Fox Brothers, Community Q, or Harold's for BBQ. Harold's is the Atlanta institution having been around since 1948 or so. Fox Brother's and Community Q are both quite good but I have to give the nod to Community Q for due to their better sides.
Silver Skillet for down home southern style food.
Kyma for Greek and Bones for a steakhouse. Both are in Buckhead.
Hope this helps. I will post more if you have any further questions.

re: twodales
No problem. Another couple of recommendations:
Woodfire Grill and Restaurant Eugene. In my opinion both are excellent and close to if not equal to Bacchanalia. If you are a Top Chef fan, Woodfire Grill is Kevin Gillespie's place.
Antico Posta for great Italian.
