Group dinner near-ish to Tufts? Places in Medford I'm forgetting about?

I'm looking for suggestions of places for a good group dinner, near Tufts, for a Saturday night (april 16). We'd be eating early (5 or 5:30) and would be out by 7:45, so even a place that gets busy later might be okay.

The ideal setting would be the following:

1) Space for about 20 people to sit together, perhaps even in a private room or corner. Doesn't have to be a single table, but at least adjacent tables would be good.

2) Relatively low budget - those who wanted to eat less and only spend 10-15 dollars could find something.

3) Within 10 minute drive of Tufts

4) Good vegetarian options (Redbones, for example, I think is out)

4) Good food!

Last time we had this gathering, we went to the Bertucci's near Wellington Circle, which was perfect, except for the food, which to me seemed way worse than the Bertucci's food that I remember. But they did have good parking, and had a private nook for us. Maybe it was just an off night?

Other ideas that have been thrown around are Christopher's in Porter, Rudy's in Teele Square.....but I'm not sure if these would be great for 20 people.

Any other suggestions? Especially in Medford, East Arlington, Somerville? Any kind of food could potentially work, as long as the budget and vegetarian options were okay...

Thanks!
Dave MP

  1. I would suggest Sabur in Teele Square. They have several vegetarian options and they have options under $20. It is a very nice atmosphere, good food and could accomodate 20 people. I have actually had dinner there with a large group and it was very enjoyable.

    1. How about Fuloon in Malden? It's about 10-15 mins drive, can cater to a modest budget, ideal for groups. I think vegetarians should find something on the menu, but note that many 'veggie' dishes, which might be meat free on a westernized chinese menu, do indeed, contain meat.

Of course, if you go, you should avoid the westernized dishes, and stick mostly to the sichuan dishes and other specialities.

      1. That Bertuccis is indeed horrid. You did not hit it on a bad night; it is always that bad.

How about the Pizza Regina's in Wellington Circle. Lots of parking, large space, and for 20 people I think they are willing to reserve. I have seen little league groups and such there.

        1. Would Pescatore work?

Gran Gusto isn't far. I think they have a room that would handle 20. Dali might be another option. Neither is quite next to Tufts but Gran Gusto has a parking lot.

I am not sure you could eat a meal at either Pescatore or Gran Gusto for $10.

Maybe not $10, and maybe not an entire meal (though it fills me up), but the truly excellent pizza margherita at GG is only $12.

Not a meal, no. But the OP said "who wanted to eat less and spend $10-15". There are plenty of salads and apps that fit that bill at Pescatore, as well as pastas and pizzas in the $11-13 range.

Had a fine meal at Pescatore on Friday, but did notice that the prices have upticked a bit - the seafood amalfi which I always thought was undervalued at $17 is now past the magical $20 barrier at $21. Given the amount of shrimp, scallops and lobster you typically get in that dish, not unreasonable, but may cause a little sticker shock for some in the nabe.

If you had any flexibility on time, I think Istanbul'lu would be perfect for you, chow-wise. Small plates in your price range and veggie offerings. It's so small though that you would have to go at a special time, I would think. Maybe not....

What about Tu y Yo? Haven't been in a while... The Foundry also has a lot of space at the back that would accommodate and lower-priced sandwiches and such. Also the Flatbread Pizza / Sacco Bowl Haven, and the Middle-Eastern place on Mass. Ave. which I cannot remember at the moment...ugh.

              3. Thanks everyone for the responses so far. Pizza Regina in Wellington might be a good bet - I called today and they do take reservations for groups this large.

I think Sabur, Gran Gusto and Pescatore are good suggestions, but maybe slightly too pricey for this occasion.

I also thought about FuLoon (just ate there for the first time last week) but I think it's slightly too far....maybe not for me, but it might be complicated convincing the rest of the group to go all the way to Malden Center.

Any other ideas would still be appreciated!
