Compass or Cafe Luxembourg?

Family visiting NYC with tickets for Company next Saturday night. Tried making reservations at Telepan but they could not accomodate a party of 6. So, I need help in choosing between Compass and Cafe Luxembourg. Both close by to walk but honestly wondering about the food and experience. Family is across the board in taste-vegetarian, meat lovers, and three who are easy to please. So, where would you go between those two choices?

For anyone considering Compass for pre-theater, the restaurant has closed but will reopen next month as a Greek restaurant.

I hope they retain the same exceptional service and front of house in their reincarnation as Loi. I must say we enjoyed the food, generous space, bar, and fabulous service when we visited Compass this past spring.

Thank you all so much. I have made reservations for Compass. I will report back on our New York trip. Everyone certainly is looking forward to the food!

Having been to both, I prefer the food at Compass and it will definitely be more comfortable at Compass. I have never had bad service at Compass, btw.

I have not had any service problems at Compass, either.

I have found the food good, but not always great, at Compass, but have never had a problem with the service; in fact I have found it quite good. For the OP's occasion I think it would be a good choice, particularly for 6 people, if the ability to have a conversation is important.

+1. Only reason I go there rarely is that it is too close to home... only go when there is a monsoon or blizzard

Café Luxembourg for an overall better, albeit cramped, experience ; Compass if you don't mind potentially unprofessional service (with good food). Have you looked at Rosa Mexicano?

i agree, compass has some of the worst service I have ever experienced, the food is not that good. Cafe Luxenbourgh is not adventurous, but always very good, and has consistantly outstanding service.

Thought of Rosa Mexicano but we are going to Toloache on Friday night. Actually with the help of Chowhound earlier in the planning for trip, I got great advice and have made reservations for Momofuku for Fried Chicken Thursday night, Toloache on Friday and had Telepan for Saturday. But needed more than a 4 top so Telepan did not work out. Now, I think we are leaning toward Compass only because the "cramp" factor. Thank you so much for feedback, I really appreciate it!

Neither is exceptional, but I would lean toward Compass. The food is a bit more interesting, though less adventurous types will find enough options too. Luxembourg is normally busier, but on a Saturday both will be full.
