Expanding a Particular Post

MGZ Apr 1, 2011 08:12 AM

Correct me if I'm wrong, but not long ago when I went to a thread I had read before, the posts I had previously seen would be closed, If I wanted to expand (open up) a single post, I clicked on the particular posters name. "Poof"

Now, when I do that, I am magically transported to the poster's profile. To my recollection, that only used to happen when the post was already open. Have forty some years of eating North Atlantic seafood led to diminished recall abilities or did something change?

  1. Gio Apr 1, 2011 08:40 AM

I'm having a problem expanding a single post as well but it's a different problem than you're having. When I click on a single post to expand one I haven't read yet...nothing happens. It does not open/expand.

This started happening earlier this morning. (Friday) It's not an April Fool joke, is it?

Now that I think about it it started happening after that horrible Share tab appeared on the left...

    1. nsxtasy Apr 1, 2011 12:43 PM

I just went to such a thread, and clicked on the poster's name on a collapsed post. It expanded that single post.

I'm not saying what you described isn't happening to you, but it's still working the same ol' way for me. (I'm using IE8 under Windows 7.)

It's working for me again now (using my "new" Chrome browser). Maybe it was fixed. Then again, maybe the lobsters have really done damage.

If you click precisely on the poster's name, you will go to the person's profile, as the name is and has always been (as far as I know) a link to the profile.

If you click on the date or anywhere else in the white space to the right of the date, you should expand the post.

Well when I "click on the date or anywhere else in the white space to the right of the date" as I have been doing since forever.... the post still does not expand for me.

ETA: When I click on the poster's name I go directly to the profile page. The post does not expand.

If so, That's never been the case for the literal thousands of posts I've opened/responded to in the past. I've always just clicked on the poster's name to open his/her comment.

Whoops - you're right, I goofed! The name only links to the profile page if the post is already expanded, for me as well. Many apologies for the confusion I inadvertently threw into the mix. :-S

When I click on the poster's name, the post expands, it does not go to the profile page. It only goes to the profile page for me when the post is expanded. The white space or anywhere else to the right does the same. I am on a Mac, running Camino (Mozilla).

same thing happening to me starting yesterday.what a nuisance. often you want to look just at the post that is being responded too, not the whole thread.

              3. GraydonCarter Apr 3, 2011 04:35 PM

Is this a bug or a feature? Well, it bugs me. Especially because when I realize I haven't remembered to click the date and then I click Go Back, all the posts on the page are now expanded, so I lost my place. Lately I just quit at that point.

There's always been some browser variation in precisely how that bar has worked, which may be where some of the confusion comes from in terms of what it did before.

It sounds like some people are definitely having new problems, though. Just to clarify for me, can people check:

                  1. What happens when you click directly on the name of a poster for an unexpanded post.
                  2. What happens when you click on the white space to the right of the poster's name on an unexpanded post.
                  3. What happens when you click on the "re: postername" on the right side of an expanded post to go to the post it was replying to.
                  4. How the above answers differ from what used to happen for you / what you expect.
                  5. Are you running any script blockers or ad blockers in your web browser?

If you've got more than one web browser that you use, and you get different results in each, can you please post the above answers for each browser. If you have more than one web browser and get the same results in each, it's fine to just post once, but please let me know what browsers and OSes you're using.

                          1. When I hover over a poster's name on an unexpanded post, the div title "Click to expand" is displayed. When I click directly on the name of a poster for an unexpanded post, the poster's profile is displayed. This behavior is different from what I expected.

                          2. When I hover over the white space to the right of the poster's name on an unexpanded post, the div title "Click to expand" is displayed. When I click on the white space, the post is expanded.

                          3. When I click on the "re: postername" on the right side of an expanded post I go to the post it was replying to.

                          4. Except for #1, everything else works fine.

All the above is true for me as well. It's maddening.

It also only happens on my work desktop. At home, it's status quo. Which makes it more impossible for me to remember where and when I have to use the new process to expand old posts. As soon as I realize I'm being directed to the poster's profile, I give up and exit chowhound altogether, because (as mentioned) now I'll never find my place in the original thread since all posts are then expanded.

I think this is related to the twitter thingy on the side. Before that was there, I could click on the post and it would expand. Now, I go to the poster's profile. However, if I click on my script blocker's "option" and then click on "temporarily allow all this page" I can once again click on the poster's name to expand that post. HOWEVER, the stupid twitter and facebook thing on the far left reappears, too.

BTW, I don't particularly mind the twitter thing, but I do mind having to take this extra step.

Usually when I surf to Chow it's with Firefox and NoScript extension. Recently (I assume when chow made their changes) I coudn't expand messages at all (individual or "expand all") and I couldn't reply to anything.

Problems all went away when I "told" NoScript to allow scripts from googleapis.com.

Add me to the list having this same problem (IE8).
But does still work in Chrome (get an info box that says can expand by clicking white space).

So 14 days later I still cannot expand just one post in a thread of anywhere from 2 responses to 578...

                                        I can't either. I have IE9.

This is still broken. Click to expand a closed post and get the posters history, not the expanded post.
