  1. I adore Ma Peche, but it is not near the UN.

The other place I was thinking was Minetta Tavern...thought Ma Peche would be closer.

Ma Peche is definitely closer. I frequently dine solo at Ma Peche. I find the food very creative and delicious and the service is very friendly and attentive. Ma Peche is now offering 2 desserts at the table (in addition to a nice selection of cheeses): a lovely apple tart and the wonderful Crack Pie from Milk Bar.

Sounds great...thanks for the advice...will report back after the trip. If you are ever in the phoenix area and need some chow help, feel free to drop me a line.

According to Mapquest, Ma Peche is about 2 miles from the UN, and Minetta Tavern is about 3 miles away.

Ma Peche is great. Another option around that area would be The Modern Bar Room.

Also look into The Breslin and Ai Fiori, which are a bit closer.

Ai Fiori is another great suggestion (and the closest to the UN). I had dinner there last week for the first time, and loved it. Dinner is more expensive than either Ma Peche or Riverpark. It's definitely more "fine dining" than either Ma Peche or Riverpark.

      2. If Riverpark is not too far away for you, then you should definitely consider it for a very good solo dining.

Riverpark is a great recommendation. Food is delicious and service is friendly. Ask for a table by the window.

        2. Palm Too is open on Sunday and is closer than any other's mentioned. a single would be fine at a booth for two. the small sirlon is a good piece of meat as well as any of the grilled fish.

I just had dinner at Palm (One) and was very underwhelmed by the rib eye steak.

          2. If you like Indian cuisine, Tulsi is on 46t, just off 3rd -- closer to the UN than any of the others mentioned. Chef/owner Hemant Mathur's "haute" Indian is astonishingly delicious. Two signatures, his tandoor-grilled lamb chops and Manchurian cauliflowers, are not-to-be-missed! The naan is outstanding! Even desserts, which are usually not very good at Indian restaurants, are wonderful. There's a very good wine list, service is friendly and attentive, and the ambiance is lovely.

Ai Fiori, though further south and east (on 5th, b/t 36th & 37th), is an excellent option. We were just there for the second time, and the meal was sensational! As fellow Hound steakrules commented, "Not a weak dish in the bunch!"
