Food deliveries in East Harlem

foodperestroika Mar 31, 2011 10:02 AM

I live in East Harlem, and find that good food deliveries are very rare. I rely on Giovanna's for pizza, El Paso Taqueria for Mexican and that's about it.
What's your experience?

Two pizza places we like are Dreamer's Pizza (whole wheat crust and fancy toppings - "healthy" pizza) and La Corsa. La Corsa does a great thin-crust grandma pie! Their pastas are hit or miss though.

Sushi Suki all the way down in the 80s will deliver up to East Harlem. They are wonderful and super fast and my favorite place to order from, albeit a little expensive. But it is good sushi and their specialty rolls are really good.

I also like Cafe Ollin and Jalapeno deli, as mentioned above. And for simple hearty fare, Pee Dee's, which is like food for cops at very reasonable prices.

I ordered from Gong once and didn't like it. Should I give them another chance?

Gong is the best Thai take away I've had on the UES. Their noodles and stir fries have been a welcome surprise in comparison to the overly sweet Thai and bland Chinese in the area, though admittedly that says more about the quality of their competitors than it does about Gong. Still, I don't think they're bad.

Thanks for responding. I'll try them again since I only ordered delivery for lunch once. Maybe they were off.

I forgot to mention Polash for Indian.

I love Indian food, but Polash is really subpar. I'd rather pick-up my food from somewhere else than order delivery from them again.

It depends on where you are located in East Harlem. In the 100s, you've got the best Mexican options: Cafe Ollin, Jalapeno Deli, Itzocan Bistro, San Francisco de Asis -- all of which I would rate more highly than El Paso delivery. As for other cuisines:
          Thai: Gong
          Vietnamese: Spice Noodle
          Burgers: Joy Burger, Ottomanelli's
          Jamaican: Winston & Tee
          Senegalese: La Galette
Latin: Lechonera El Barrio, Amor Cubano
          French: Yo In, Yo Out
          Pizza: Luzzo's
Walking around the neighborhood, you should also get acquainted with the bodegas. A few of them make pretty decent food and deliver.

Nice list thanks! I definitely have to try more of the Mexican and Latino places. I went to Itzocan a couple times, I just never ordered for delivery from them. I remember trying Ottomanelli Bros and being rather disappointed Huge portions but not so good. Joy Burger's good, but I'm not sure I wanna eat a burger 30 minutes after it's been made. Yo In Yo Out serves stuff I'd rather have for lunch.

You cannot find such a variety and surplus of great Latin and Mexican food in any other Manhattan neighborhood. From the chicken pastelitos and carne guisada at Lechonera El Barrio to the massive tortas and cemitas at Cafe Ollin, you are bound to find something you love. I'm also partial to the off-menu chicken quesadillas at Jalapeno Deli.

I've started going through your list, here are my findings so far:
              - Gong doesn't deliver above 109th St unfortunately. I live on 118th.
              - La Galette was pretty good, but delivery was terribly slow (over an hour). I'd definitely order from them again when I have time to plan ahead. Portions are very large.

Hey, JungMann, thanks for the tip on Cafe Ollin! Based on your recommendation, and a timely Groupon offer, we tried it for the first time last night. Groupon nixed delivery, so we stopped by; it is a cute, clean, and friendly little place. We got the food to go and it was very good. The hottest Pollo en Salsa Verde ever, and I liked the Plato Juancho with chicken, oaxacan cheese, and fresh, tender cactus. I particularly liked the fact that unlike some other Latin places I like, including Lenchonera, the food was lighter on the salt. Have you tried the Puerto Rican food at La Fonda Boriqua on East 106th? My favorite chicharrones and some other great home style dishes.

Cafe Ollin is really an undiscovered gem. I ordered tortitas de camaron from their Lenten menu for dinner Friday night and am still eating picking at the leftovers. $10 for a really generous amount of briny shrimp cakes in a complex, spicy sauce, not to mention rice and beans and tortillas.

I've been to La Fonda Boricua once and thought it was good, but not something I'd go out of my way for.
