New smokehouse/bbq in Manahawkin - anyone been?

I noticed a new place has opened up in the little strip mall at Route 9 and Bay Ave. that used to house the Dunkin' Donuts. I believe it's called "The Pit", and advertises itself as "smokehouse/bbq" - any feedback?

  1. Only had one take out from there, It was good ribs, good beans, sides the folks were friendly, I plan to try them again soon.

      They need some kind of good BBQ in that area ever since Ben's Extreme BBQ closed its locations

        What a JOKE as if Forked River is even close to Manahawkin. Geesh.

        But good BBQ is welcome everywhere and I think this place has a shot at some nice BBQ.

    2. It's called Brick Pit Smokehouse & Grill. We've been there once, and it was pretty good. The bbq skirt steak was interesting, though I would probably get it without the sauce next time. We do plan to go back and eventually post about it on our blog. - John

        Stopped in for lunch today. Without perusing the menu, I asked for a pulled pork sandwich. Very friendly staff, neat and tidy with seating for about two dozen. Kitchen appeared to be spotless. I had a few words with the young owner. He spent some time in the kitchens of the Frog and the Peach, and Daniel in Manhattan. As if he could read my mind, he offered me (Lavazza) an espresso. Very nice! Out came my package. $8.95. I could barely wait to get to my oceanfront bench on LBI. Superb bun, like white bread trying to be brioche. About 1 1/2 times the size of a Martin's potato roll. Good amount of bbq. Good smoke and vinegar flavors. Killer fries, the coated ones! Also, a souffle cup w/ slaw, which I couldn't eat w/o a fork. Glad I had napkins in the car. I gotta say it was excellent. I think they'll do well.

          Ok,I can`t wait to try this.I love bbq and usually travel t get it.I live local.I pe they make it and I give the entrepeneur credit for doing 1 main thing- NOT opening another freaking Pizza joint in NJ!.. I think so many more ppl would be more successful if they took a chance on outside the norm rather than opening up the same standard fare..Hopefully they do well and can afford a PERMANENT store sign (instead of the temporary I don`t know if I can invest the $ into a real sign banner) and help spur others with unique foods on (Greek? Fish & CHips?)... I can`t wait to try & support this local business

            rapidnj, while in that area, hop across old Bay Ave to the Lake plaza (like 2 doors down on Rt 9) and try Senor Frog. EXCELLENT real fresh Mexican!

              Stopped in last night to pick up dinner - the owner is a really nice guy, and his enthusiasm is infectious. The menu includes the standard bbq fare (ribs/wings/chicken) but he also offers some interesting burgers (the "Big Daddy" is 2 patties, applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese and fried onions, e.g.), fried fish (Corona batter), and some wraps and salads. Appetizers range from the usual to some Mexican - think quesadillas and empanadas - as well as macaroni & cheese bites served with sour cream. He also offers bourbon bread pudding for dessert, along with double stack s'mores - gonna have to go back and try some sweets. Anyway, I ordered a couple of pulled pork sandwiches and they were quite good - a good portion of super tender pork with a sauce that was nice, but not overpowering - the roll was the perfect consistency - soft enough to compliment the meat, but sturdy enough to hold up without falling apart. All in all it's a nice addition to a dining scene that is woefully pizza/chinese/sub heavy (by the way, they advertise free delivery).

                Sad to report this rest has CLOSED.Signs on window indicate equipment for sale.
                Regardless of how nice the owner may be, the simple fact is 24.99 for a rack of ribs at a take out was probably a little much for the area/economy etc. I praise their efforts to not open another shore pizza joint.
