Genuine Cuban Cortadito in Santa Rosa . . . Creo Que Sí

Where my favorite hot dog stand in Sonoma County used to be, Max Cafe now operates from 8 to 8 next to the mall entrance to Whole Foods in Coddingtown. If the name sounds vaguely familiar, the same owner runs Taco Max, a chowhound favorite, located in the central part of the shopping center. The menu still includes a couple hot dogs (Mexican, New York style, etc.), as well as espressso drinks, smoothies, soft tacos (5/$5), and panini. But what caught my eye on the board was Cuban coffee.

Then I found out that the proprietor lived in Miami for 15 years and developed a taste for café Cubano in the morning. Sounded credible to me, so I asked ordered a cortadito. The espresso beans and the milk are organic, and he assured me that I would not get “the shakes” from drinking his Cuban coffee. Served medium-sweet with a dense, creamy head of milky foam, a real aficionado of the style might need more sugar. But for my taste, this was sweet enough to smooth over the bitterness and raise the blood sugar to start the day. Only $2 to cure the Monday morning blues.
