Hilton Head/Savannah -- Help me avoid Amtrak food!
I'll be at a conference in Hilton Head, and I will need to leave early to catch a train to the north that leaves Savannah at 8:20 AM. I estimate that between driving, returning the rental car to the airport, and then getting to the train station from the airport, I will need to leave Hilton Head at about 6-6:30 in the morning.
This will be a 10-12 hour trip, and the train does not have a dining car, but rather the infamous Amtrak Cafe car, with choices limited to packaged food-like items. (They do sell a Hebrew National hot dog that's OK if you can get the attendant to toast the bun instead of microwaving it.)
I would like to know if there are any decent carryout places along the route where I can pick up at least one (if not all) of the day's meals that would provide food that would keep for a few hours and is packaged so that I can carry it around with my luggage while I'm doing the transfer from the Airport to the train station and boarding the train. Are there any alternatives to pick something up on Hilton head island the night before? (That would most likely have to be totally nonperishable stuff, as I will probably not have a refrigerator in my hotel room.)
I think I'm OK on eating spots on Hilton Head while I'm there, as I found a number of good posts, but if anybody has any last-minute status reports about their favorite places, I'd always be interested to hear them. But then again, this is a conference, so I may end eating out at a place chosen by group consensus, so who knows where I'll end up.
