Something different like Joe's?
Looking for somewhere to go with two friends on a Saturday night. We went to Joe's in Venice a few years ago, and it was very nice. Would like to try somewhere else this time along the same lines or even a little more upscale. One of my friends likes a cool, trendy place. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Phurstluv and Baron have good recs. Gjelina is the hippist most popular table on Abbot Kinney right now. Purposely dressed in hip-rustic, I think most hipsters would feel right at home but getting reservations could be a challenge. If the night is nice, sit in back in the patio or the adjacent room to the patio.
Cafe Del Rey is a place that a more established set (think Frank Sinatra 30 years ago) would really enjoy. The view is great at night (not so much during the day when you can actually make out the adjacent harbor), and the food is solid as well.
Another place to consider is Tasting Kitchen, which is a couple of blocks south of Gjelina. The space is definitely hip-contemporary - feels and looks like the homes that have sprung up in the 'hood - probably a $2M space - with excellent food and drinks. Expect the menu to be somewhat unique and angled from an Oregonian's perspective of Cal cuisine. Regardless, you can't miss with them or the other two recs.

Cafe del Rey is cool, trendy and has great food. It's in a great room, view of the boats, great service. And, IMHO, it is a bit more "upscale" than Joes (which I also like). Located in Marina del Rey and has convenient parking.
