Craving me a slice of pie...
Where do you go for your pie fix?
I'm craving me a slice of banana creme pie...peanut butter and chocolate too!
Why aren't pie shops on every corner..
I want to see a Pie Truck..that would kick some serious butt in SD.

Had a couple of excellent mini-pies (Pecan & Apple) from "Under The Crust" at La Jolla Farmers' Market this weekend. Chef/Owner Hannah Cohen also makes larger (I was told deep dish only) pies to order.

Just read an article in the food section of UT that mentioned ordering pies with proceeds going to charity: http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/o...
"Mama’s Pie in the Sky Thanksgiving Bake Sale: Get your orders in now through Nov. 18 for fresh pumpkin, pecan, apple and no-sugar added apple pies made by local restaurants like 25 Forty Bistro, Alchemy, Elizabethan Desserts, Sbicca, Urban Solace and more. Just $20 each, and available on Nov. 21, this fundraiser is the West Coast's largest bake sale, and nets $100,000 to support home-delivered meals for our neighbors affected by AIDS or cancer. (619) 233-6262 or mamaspies.org."

Hey BC,
Anybody mention Mama Kats Restaurant & Pie Shop in San Marcos? Been going there for my pies for about 15 years now. They make some damn good homemade pie. And they make all their pies to order with 24 hr notice! They have all of your cravings above, and then some!
I do love Mom's Pie, but Julian or Santa Ysabel aren't exactly convenient locations for most.
-
I'm not sure if this is news, and I haven't tried them myself but I noticed that Albertsons (at least the one on Tourmaline) carries Julian Bakery apple pie

re: Rodzilla
Just a minor correction, Rodzilla - that would be the Julian Pie Company's apple pies, I believe. Julian Bakery is breads, and they're not even located in Julian! Albertson's carries their breads, also.
Several stores in San Diego County carry Julian Pie Company's apple pies, including Albertson's, Keil's, Harvest Ranch Market, Jimbo's, Jonathan's, and Stater Brothers. Some frozen and some boxed and ready to devour.

re: Rodzilla
They're good but I'm fussy about apple pies. My nana had a cafe in Chula Vista years ago, and she was known for her pies. Apple was the most popular, and for good reason.
I have had Mom's Apple Pie, also in Julian, and I think it's a bit better. Unfortunately, they don't sell those anyplace else but their two locations (Julian and Wynola).
-
re: phee
I agree with Phee - I always have thought that Mom's are a little bit better. More of a home made feel, if that makes any sense.
I was pleased to see that they opened the Wynola store - much easier to get in and out of there, and you don't have to carry the pie a few blocks to where you are parked.

Don't think so.
But Rachel Going makes some pretty mean pies - http://rachelgoing.com/ - and will sell directly to you. Still waiting for Elizabethan desserts to open her store front.

re: DiningDiva
Julian Pie Company makes their list of 16. Interesting...
I knew that Albertson's carried their pies, but did not know that they carry so many varieties now (at least the Balboa Avenue store does). I had a difficult time figuring out which one to pick up for a Thanksgiving dinner.

re: DiningDiva
There is a great and somewhat famous pie place on the way to Sedona outside of PHX that we hit up every year..
Rock Springs Cafe off the I-17..

Here ya go BC, the U/T Superdiners weigh in on best pie in SD. http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/20...
Too bad they didn't read your thread first, some of their responses weren't very enlightened, couple of them were downright stupid and you'd think no one can do pies unless they live in Juian. Catt White got it right...pies ARE the next thing after cupcakes, not macaroons.

All this pie discussion, and not a mention of https://www.mamaspies.org/ a fundraiser for Mama's Kitchen. Lots of (tip)top pie bakers creating pies for $20.
Hurry to the link before the mods read this and ground me for a week.

She was on KUSI this morning and mentioned she was opening up a new Pie shop later on and that 'Beach Chick' on Chowhound with her myriad of pie postings, made her realize that a pie shop was needed in SD and that I was the sole responsible party to make her see the 'pie light'.

re: Beach Chick
Most interesting think I saw on the pie show were pie pops; lollipop on a stick only the lollipop was replaced by pie. Roll the dough, position a wooden coffee stir stick and press into the dough, dollop of filling, top crust, crimp, bake and voila, pie on a stick. Pretty nifty concept. 3 or 4 bites of pie that can be eaten on the go.
But, I'm going to Chicago and Durham, NC for pie. They featured pie shops from 2 shops that had the absolutely most delectable looking pies I think I've seen in a long time. I think the Elizabethan lattice topped cherry could have given the pies from these 2 shops some serious competition.
Part of me hopes her new shop will be closer than Encinitas, part of me hopes it won't because I can't afford to be there every day for pie even though every fiber of my being will be saying "wha'ts one more little piece of pie". I have little to no resistence when it comes to pie

re: DiningDiva
I saw those pie pops...saw one where they put mini cupcakes with icing too..
In the south, those fab pie shops are much more common and so quaint, with pie that is off the chain good.
Take pics of your pie in Durham, NC..
I hope that she, the owner of Elizabethan Desserts, will venture closer to SD..she would do very well in downtown LJ/Mission Hills/Gaslamp/Pt.Loma.I hear you on the pie...do they have rehab for pie?
Screw that...I like being addicted to pie!-

Call the Grove Bakery in Lemon Grove, even though the do mostly cakes, they've got a fairly new executive chef/head baker and I know he can do it.
The pies at Elizabethan Desserts are all pretty good. They don't do chocolate cream, but they do a milky way pie that's close.

re: DiningDiva
You guys inspired me to stop by Elizabethan Desserts on the weekend and I picked up the Strawberry Rhubarb.
It was really good and everyone in the extended family really appreciated it also. It was a very refreshing change to actually be able to taste the fruit flavors in the pie and not have it just be a total overwhelming sugar rush.
Additionally, the carmelization on the outer crust was a very nice touch (and the lattice top was very good as well).

Found a pie place in PB. Little individual pies, not slices. Irish ladies recipes passed down generations. Gluten free options. Also: coffee cakes, cupcakes, cakes, tarts, breads, biscuits, muffins. Haven't checked it out yet but looks promising!

Elizabethan Desserts in Encinitas does a mean pie. Her little cherry pielets are really to die for. Best of all, you don't have to share :-)
Pie truck, love it. If you've got the capital, I've got the recipes. Made a dynamite Chocolate Peanut Pie on Saturday
