Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Manhattan

Parents' first trip to NYC

My parents are coming to visit at the end of April and I want to take them out for a quality steak while they're here. The price of food is not an issue for me but they are from the midwest and spending $50 on a steak would be obscene in their opinion, and they never let me pay or this wouldn't be an issue. They don't drink so I don't need to factor alcohol into the meal cost so I'm thinking around $30 max per person would be cool. Is there a place in the city where I can get a good steak for this? Location is not a factor, just taste and price. Help!

  1. If I understand correctly, "$30 max per person" is just for the steak. If you go to Keens & order Porterhouse for 2 ($96) if it will be just the 3 of you, or Porterhouse for 3 ($126) if you will be 4, you should have enough to eat. (In our multiple-diner parties, we always order Porterhouse for one less person. Have never left hungry.) The steak will be delicious. Keep in mind side dishes are extra, however.

That is a great suggestion and I have read wonderful things about that porterhouse. It was between Keens and Strip House last time I was in the city and SH won out by a small margin. The only thing I would worry about is that my dad, god bless him, eats his steak more on the well done side whereas mom and I tend toward the med-rare side and I don't think any of us would give on that one. I may just have to put my foot down and insist on treating them to dinner. What is the typical dress at Keens? Is it a place where we could get by wearing jeans?

I think jeans are fine, but I would suggest a nice button-down shirt (that is, if you are a 'he'). I have to add that it's a shame your father might miss some of the steak's sweetness & flavor by overcooking it. Could you not convince him that well done steak is illegal in Manhattan?

    2. Have you looked at Buenos Aires? It's an argentine steakhouse in Alphabet City. I haven't been in ages, but I used to love it.
