Seeking opinions about Thai Plate

Can any one comment on Thai Plate?

I asked for opinions about Mengrai before Christmas for an office party. It was a good thing that I tried it before I made reservations. We didn't like the food..

  1. Thai Plate is a good option on the North end of the city. I order delivery from them regularly, and occasionally stop in for their Friday lunch buffet (a totally great deal at $9.95 for all you can eat). The flavour profiles of the different dishes are distinct and the quality of the ingredients is very good. They aren't trying to do high end or "fusion" Thai, but the food is tasty nonetheless. If you want spicy, you will have to be pretty emphatic that you want "Thai spicy", because the one thing I find is that they have toned down the heat levels for their audience.

Definitely give them a try. The family that runs it is also incredibly sweet.

Note that this is not a special destination restaurant -- the location on Bathurst, next to a parking lot leaves something to be desired. But if you are in the area, don't hesitate to go there.

We order takeout from them all the time, very tasty and fresh at a reasonable price. I particularly enjoy the spicy beef salad. I was less impressed with the lunch buffet, although it wasn't bad.

    2. I've only eaten there once, but really enjoyed the flavours in the food, and the friendly service. It's one of three Thai restaurants I love in the city.

      1. We went to Thai Plate Monday night. It was really good and it will be a regular spot for us.

We decided on the AYCE tasting menu. A meal of vegie dishes was $19 and if you had one or more meat dishes it was $23.

We figured that only a main course at a Western restaurant was the same price or more as a whole meal, so what the heck, let's go for it. Besides, if we didn't like something we could ask for something else.

We started with cold rolls, deep fried wonton, chicken wings, mango salad and pineapple salad. Then we had a ginger vegetable soup. We chose as mains red curry chicken, grilled marinated beef, basil chicken , pad Thai and ginger tofu. We finished with dessert which was mango icecream on coconut rice, and fresh pineapple on coconut rice.

Everything was delicious and we asked for repeats of some of the dishes.

I think we took advantage of the owners being nice based on what other posters have said. We asked for pineapple in with the basil chicken. The waitress thought that this combination was peculiar but we got it it with any objection. But she did want to bring us a second dish of basil chicken without the pineapple so that we we wouldn't be disappointed. We said no thank you to the offer. We thought that the basil chicken with pineapple was delicious.

        Thank you fellow chowhounds!

Glad to hear you had a good experience. I forgot to mention that grilled marinated beef -- it's one of my favourites. It doesn't actually taste particularly Thai to me (the flavour profile tastes Chinese), but it's tasty and tender and I love it with plain rice and mango salad.

Try their Friday lunch buffet some time if you can. For $9.95, I think it's one of the better lunch deals in town.
