Mexicali Taco on 1st and Beaudry
2nd part of a food crawl Saturday night. With my wife and I taking turns being out of town the last few weekends, a Saturday night food crawl was a great excuse for us to catch up and also for me to take her to a few places I've gone without her.
Posted on Feng Mao earlier. After the lamb, we headed off to Mexicali and arrived there around 9:30 and they were in full gear. With some of the hype having died down, there was plenty of parking and only a few people in line ahead of us. Unfortunately they were out of the vampiro sauce that evening. Still we each got a carne asada cachetada and quesidilla. Wife was very happy about the quality of the meat. Liked the seasoning, the grilling was executed well and she was astounded by how much meat they gave.
Items run $2-3 each, ridiculously inexpensive given the quality and quantity of food. They are set up very well with plenty of fresh salsas and sides. Only a few tables next to the grill but plenty of napkins available. I like the fact that you actually have solid plastic plates for your food so you're not fighting a a floppy paper one since the items are so large and substantial.
Another quintessential LA experience, perched on a car in a parking lot near a freeway overpass with the lights of downtown LA shining down on us and munching on some incredible food that you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere else.
