Automatic restaurant link that's incorrect?/

Midlife Mar 28, 2011 09:20 AM

This may be really simple but I've been noticing that sometimes a name used in a post will trigger the insertion of an automatic restaurant link when the name isn't even a restaurant. I noticed one today in a wine board post which mentioned a winery by name and the system apparently produced a link to a restaurant about 200 miles away and certainly not that winery.
In one of my own posts the auto-link was to a different location of the same restaurant I was citing.

Is this something that can be removed through editing? Or.......... corrected............. Or not included at all?

You can report the post to the mods and explain the problem. I've done that a lot on the NYC boards and they're very helpful about removing bad links.

      it gets so tiresome, frankly.

i've always had problems with this feature. it seems only available on one's original post, not any edit. sometimes it doesn't have the "link." and...you cannot do more than one "link" to a post.

The 'manage links' function should be available when you edit the post -- there'll be a list of places already linked, and a box to input additional restaurants. Are you not seeing it when you edit?

And you should also be able to link more than one thing -- though only one thing can be marked as 'this is a review of a specific restaurant'.

In general, it should be possible for users to adjust their own links, whether before they post or in the 2 hour edit window after they post, but you can also flag for the moderators if it's past the 2 hour window, or if the incorrect link is on someone else's post. If you see the same Restaurant causing problems time and again (often where a restaurant is named for a street or town, for example) we can also exclude a specific restaurant from ever automatically linking, so if that's the case, please let us know in a note with your report.

If I'm not mistaken, the person whose post resulted in the automatic link has the ability to remove that link at any time, using the Remove button next to it. IOW the two-hour restriction on editing the content of a post does not apply to the removal of automatic links.
