Where to buy 'back bacon'?

Hi chowhound,

I always had big piece of bacon i think they called it 'back bacon' while i was in UK. In canada or america they only serve stripe style bacon i can never find the ones i ate in uk in loblaws, or other supermarkets. anyone know where i can get those?

Caineroad, do you mean the bacon that looks like a piece of streaky bacon, with the loin attached? I remember having that bacon when visiting London recently, but have never seen it in Toronto. It was delicious - streaky bacon and back bacon all in one! Would be great to find it here!

As I understand it that is what the Brits also call "Irish Bacon" if you ask for it by that name you might have better luck. I've never actually seen it here, you're not going to find it at the regular grocery stores but if you ask around at SLM some of the butchers who source artisinal bacon might be able to get some cut that way.

ah yea you're right i'll go check it out but i dont expect them to be on the 'regular bacon pricing'

I cannot believe there is no Irish bacon for sale in regular grocery stores... considering toronto is a diverse city with people coming in from around the GOLBE.

Sobey's has Irish bacon. It appears to be lightly smoked, whereas peameal bacon is just brined.

FYI - Irish bacon is back bacon...but not cured like ours. It's available everywhere, That being said, SLM is the best place to look.

Back bacon is different than peameal...which if different than irish bacon.....which are all very similar...if that makes any sense....

I think what you are looking for is pea meal bacon. It's similar to Gamon rather than rashers of bacon.

Ummm, you can find it anywhere here but maybe SLM, or most butchers have it.
