Not to be missed dining and drinking in LA

We will be visiting LA from London shortly, during which my partner will be celebrating a special birthday. We only have 4 days during which I want to ensure we have some great dining experiences and visit a few nice bars as well. Any recommendations of not to be missed places for the best of Californian cuisine?

For the best of California cuisine, the tasting menus at Providence (seafood centric but the tasting menu always includes an excellent meat course) and Spago (Wolfgang Puck's flagship) would be natural choices, especially for a special birthday.

Where are you staying? Will you have a car?

      Gjelina is a must.

Tasting Kitchen is just a couple of blocks down for Gjelina. They're no slouch either and they do have a full bar with intriguing drinks as well.

Bazaar, just for the OP's sake, is not Californian cuisine.

But if one were to go to Bazaar, I would recommend Saam, instead of the front of the house dining room.

This is a good starting place for you, this link is to Chowhound's 2010 vote for favorite restaurants in LA in two categories under $25 and over $25 done by our fellow chowhounder maxzook. Good luck and welcome to LA.

Rivera, downtown at LA Live, for food and drinks...i love the sea bass and ceviche...for drinks, from the menu, try the Donaji or one of the rye whiskey drinks - transcendental, and most definitely not your mother's margarita.

Agree with Rivera. Excellent mixology, and featuring intruiging, well-made nueva Latina cuisine.
