Doris and Eds or Fromagerie?

Trying to decide between these two for a visit during restaurant week. Have not been to either in ages. Which would you choose?

  1. I have not been to Doris and Ed's, but Fromagerie used to be one of my favorite special occasion restaurants until David Burke took over. It was all downhill from there...

    1. I have never been a fan of Doris & Ed's.

We had dinner at David Burke's Fromagerie two years ago, Though there were some problems with the food, there were also some merits. I'd say for RW, it's worth a try. If you do go, please report back.

      1. Also not a big fan of Doris & Ed's. Food is decent and ambiance not much to speak of. Fromagerie, on the other hand, is one of the better restaurants in Monmouth County IMHO. The first couple of years after David Burke took over the restaurant from the Peters, it was hit or miss. When it hit, it was up there with the best of the best. As a result, when it missed, it was very disappointing. That said, for the last couple of years, its been all hits. From the amuse to the cheese popovers to the entrees, to the cotton candy delivered at the end of the meal...consistently exceptional. For steak lovers, they are now dry-aging their beef on site. Last time, had their Rib-eye and it was so tender and tasty...up there with the best of the steakhouses. Servers are knowledgeable and attentive, without being overbearing. I love the ambiance in the main dining room, although it can get fairly loud, so try to get a table in the corner.

Between Doris and Ed's and Fromagerie.......not much of a comparison in my book

It does sound as though things have improved since our dinner two years ago. We may have to give it a try again.

RGR, would love to hear what you think when you try it again. Always impressed with your reviews, posts and opinions.

I very much appreciate your kind words, Iggfly! :)

I've looked at Fromagerie's current menu. Interesting to see the Pretzel-crusted Crab Cake listed, which we had at Fishtail, one of his Manhattan restaurants. I thought the crab cakes would be crusted with crushed pretzels; instead, long pretzels were bundled together and "tied" on top of the cakes. Strange looking, but it turned out to be quite tasty. Of course, his two signature apps are there. My husband had the Angry Lobster, which I tasted and didn't impress me. And years ago, we had the Pastrami Salmon at Park Avenue Bistro, where Burke was executive chef and made a name for himself before leaving to open his own restaurant(s). It was very good.

The Soy Honey Duck Breast, which I had, is still on the menu though I think the accompaniments may be different.

I may wait until further into the spring or summer before going back because I prefer the produce of those seasons, and I would hope they will appear on the menu in one form or another.

If and when we do go again, I will definitely report back.

        2. I was originally thinking Dish in Red Bank before I realized it was restaurant week. I might go back to that idea (I have never been but it gets positive reviews here) or give Fromagerie a try. I will report back either way. Thanks!

          1. We did Fromagerie last Restaurant week (2010) and it was FANTASTIC. This year we are trying Doris and Eds (along wit many others). I will report back with my findings.

            1. So we decided to try the Fromagerie. We were there on a busy Saturday, although I am sure they are busy on most Saturday nights. Unfortunately, I think this affected both the food and the service (or timing of the food, which may not have been the server's fault).

We started at the bar. I had a glass of wine and some of my fellow diners enjoyed some of the DBF Specialty Cocktails. The bartender was funny and attentive. Our reservations were for 6:45 and they sat us on time.

Most of us took advantage of the RW menu. We started off on a positive note with the apps. I had the grilled octopus which was cooked nicely and served on top of mashed potatoes and also had some lamb bacon sprinkled over the top. While I am a fan of bacon, it might not have needed it, although I think I get why something salty was added to the dish. The pea flan and the hearts of escarole salad were also described as very good.

For our entrees, we ordered the corn meal crusted skate wing, the 1/2 chicken with green spaetzle, and the salmon. The happiest diner of the night was the one that ordered from the regular menu. She had the mustard crusted tuna with lobster dumplings and truly enjoyed every bite. I didn't get any feedback on the salmon dish. I had the skatewing and it was mediocre. The dish was bland looking (beige) and my fish was a little overcooked. The trumpet mushrooms were kind of tough. The baby artichokes were yummy and my favorite part of the dish. I think there was supposed to be some sort of lemon sauce on the dish, but I could not find it. It was also a tad salty.

My two fellow diners that had the chicken dishes had to send them back because they were undercooked. When the dishes returned to the table, they were still undercooked. One diner opted for a salad and the other opted to eat around it and enjoyed her spaetzle and the chicken breast portion of her 1/2 chicken. We also ordered sides of truffle frites and sauteed spinach. The truffle fries came out first and were cold. We sent them back and did not see them until after most of us were done with our meals. When they came back they were warmer but not hot. The spinach came out after that.

The desserts were all tasty, but nothing was a "you must try this" kind of dish.

Both the uneaten chicken dish and the sides were taken off the bill.

I definitely expected better. Time to try Dish!

Or go ahead and check out Doris & Ed's; Unlike most posters on this board my wife and I are very happy regulars there...

must say that your experience with Fromagerie is disappointing, especially the under cooked food - we had four rock solid meals there last summer and fall

we will be moving back down to the shore in a few months and would like to know if there are any reason except maybe an off night that would have caused such a bad experience - new chef, etc.
