Elsewhere is on that block; a good pick if you are willing to be somewhat adventurous, as there are not a ton of options and some of them are somewhat unconventional. One caveat: if you are pressed on time, may not be as good an option, as service still needs some work (it is relatively new)
Esca is a solid option, depending on what price range you are looking at.
As noted by RGR, Marseille is a good pre-theater bet as well.-----

Marseille is very popular. Reservations would be a good idea.

We had dinner a few months back at Dafni Greek Taverna on 42nd (between 8th & 9th). Also not sure I would call it "great", but it was very good and a pleasant atmosphere.

Marseille, on the corner of 9th & 44th. Though I wouldn't describe the food as "great," it is certainly very good.

re: smilingal
Ended up in Chimichurri Grill. Great place. We had chicken and meat empanadas, grass fed strip steaks with crispy onions, friends had prawns and a pork dish, with sides of burnt (that is what they were called!) cauliflower (really roasted the way I always make it! YUM!), and escarole. The bartenderess made a great side-car. I would visit again - however, too many others to investigate - and I must also confess that I was a bit disappointed in the quality of the steak @ $32! Pretty place with white tablecloths.
We were unable to get reservations for Marseille or Hell's Kitchen. Those will be for next time.
