Day time cocktails near union square?

Looking for a place for a small group (8ish) to grab some well-made drinks in the mid/late afternoon on a weekday, must be within a few blocks of unions square.

Currently thinking of either the bar at the W or Rye house - running into some limitations as a lot of places that are always recommended for fancy cocktails dont seem to open until 5 (regardless of location issues). Probably leaning towards rye house because i like their drinks a lot, not sure how the seating is at the W but it doesnt look ideal for a group our size (high chairs at rye hosue probably better than backless footstool things at the W).

We'd like somewhere nice but not stuffy or super crowded (though im thinking ~4pm on a tuesday shouldnt be a big deal anywhere) is there something obvious I am missing?

Was in NYC for a weekend and wandered into Rye House. Found it to be casual, welcoming, and armed with an immensely knowledgeable bartender. Liked it so much Thursday afternoon we went back Friday for the bartender's variations on the Sazerac (one involving cognac), and brought more friends on Saturday. An easy place to spend a few hours.

The bar at the back of Coffee Shop is fun, kinda funky, but not fancy.

How about the Tavern Room at Gramercy Tavern. It shouldn't be crowded at that time in the afternoon and is a beautiful room with interesting cocktails and great wines by the glass.

I was wandering up Broadway from US about a week ago, midweek and late afternoon, and the impulse for a drink and a snack him me just as I was passing Craftbar. I followed the impulse, had a few negronis, the olive and almond app., and some cheese and bread. There were a few other patrons, some (like me) at the bar, some at tables, and a waitstaff that seemed happy to see us.

The same sceanrio has played out for us several *ahem* times. They can mix some fine cocktails there and seem genuinely happy to have patrons during the mid afternoon lull.

Perhaps Lillies, on 17th just west of Union Square? It is a comfortable spot, open in the afternoons, and has a well-stocked bar (focuses on Whiskeys due to a UK/Victorian theme)
