baby artichokes in Vancouver?

For a baby shower, I would like to make a number of baby/miniature vegetables into a pasta salad. My absolute favourite baby vegetable has got to be baby artichokes. However, I haven't even been seeing regular artichokes around very much. We should be getting into that season, right? My husband works for a supermarket and he says that they haven't even been bringing in artichokes because the supply hasn't been up to their quality standards. Did the artichoke crop do poorly this year and that's why I'm not seeing them?

Apart from my husband's store, I mostly go to the greengrocers on Victoria between 41st and 49th for my produce, but I'm willing to go anywhere in the metro area for this special occasion buy. The baby shower will be next weekend.

  1. Hello,

The freezing in Mexico has in fact affected artichoke supplies. Other items common to Vancouver grocers such as japanese eggplants have all but disappeared.

In the past we have received our baby artichokes from Mikuni. They are a specialty supplier that deals mainly with restaurants but perhaps they can sell you a half case.
