New Haven Lunch Spots
I was in NH today with only an hour before an appointment, so I stopped at Thali Too (or II or Two), a vegetarian Indian restaurant on Broadway. Well, just a little off Broadway. Park in the Bway parking lot, and walk through the covered way next to the entrance to the B&N bookstore. The decor is sort of Metro-Techno, very clean, and lots of seats. Prices are reasonable, since they cater to students, but I saw several family groups there and the kids were enjoying their meal as much as the adults.
I ordered Chai Tea and Kothmir Chawal (a mildly spicy rice/onion/chili dish) from their extensive menu with the idea of taking some home and trying another sample of their "Tiffin menu", but it was so tasty I scarfed down the whole thing, and then only had time for some carmel ice cream for dessert. It was ok, but I would rather have skipped their ice cream and gone to Ashley's for a cone. You can find their menu at www.thali.com as well as that for their other Thali restaurants which are more upscale (and more expensive!).
Other places I have had pleasant lunches at (other than the many good italian restaurants on Wooster street) might be Caseus, Ibiza, Zinc (closed Monday), Temple Grill, or Lalibella--an Ethiopian restaurant whose unique serving method really brings families together!
