2011 James Beard Nominees announced

Here is the complete list of nominees.

Personally, I was a little disappointed that some of the big books this year were not acknowledged. Surprisingly, given what a cook book hound I am, there were several that I hadn't even heard of...

    The Frankies Spuntino Kitchen Companion & Cooking Manual

    I've seen this book so many times at Borders. Very few cookooks were left at the closing of at Borders, Winchester, VA store, but there were two copies of this one. Counting too many Italian cookbooks already in my library to ever reach for it if I did buy it.

    I wonder what I'm missing, but I see nothing in it for me.

      I'm really happy to see "Stir-Frying to the Sky's Edge: The Ultimate Guide to Mastery, with Authentic Recipes and Stories" by Grace Young, and I Love "Avec Eric".

      This is baffling: Ruth Bourdain,Twitter.com/RuthBourdain. And, YAY to the Boston nominees.

            If James Beard was still alive, what do you think he would think of "Ruth?" Or Anthony, for that matter!

              If James Beard returned from the great beyond he'd give his Jeffrey Steingarten sneer. The one JS makes when he doesn't like the remarks of one of his fellow judges.

        I found this one amusing:
        ...............................
        Salted: A Manifesto on the World's Most Essential Mineral, with Recipes
        by Mark Bitterman
        (Ten Speed Press)
        ..................................

        By Mark who....? Bitter grapes!

          But that is the name of the author - it's not Mark Bittman who wrote the book. :-) (I will admit, however, that I went to Amazon.com to see if they had an egregious typo there! LOL)

            That's funny! ne of those guys ought to change his first name to "Anthony." '-)

          what is the deal with TWO nominations of duff goldman? i seriously don't "get" his appeal -- nor that of his seemingly-drug-addled associates making "cakes" from styrofoam. i guess it is just (quasi-) food as entertainment.

          ~~~~~~
          i vote for "alex's day off" and "avec eric."
          ~~~~~~~~~
          does anyone have that claudia roden "big book" on mediterranean cuisine? very tempting....

          how about the "low country cooking" book?

          or the book about food history, "feasts, famines. ..etc."?

            Yeah, I don't get the Duff Goldman thing either, but obviously someone likes him!

            For best radio show, one of them is:

            Martha Stewart Living Radio: Anthony Bourdain and Eric Ripert: Turn and Burn
            Hosts: Anthony Bourdain and Eric Ripert

            :-)

            And Top Chef is up for best TV program/in studio. Also glad to see two Boston-area chefs up for Best in Northeast.
