DATE NIGHT....NEED A DC HOT SPOT

My husband and I are repressed foodies because we have been on baby duty for the last four years. We have made it out to Rasika , Zatinya, and a few other spots, but date nights have been few and far between. We have one of those coveted dates coming up and I am turning to you all for help. We want to go somewhere with really good food and a hot vibe. Something with a hip atmosphere and good food. We don't have a budget since we don't go out much. Willing to make it count. Not so much into a romantic atmosphere...but would rather have some energy in the room (if that makes sense).

Please, please help. :)

This place is so overrated. Proof's food is much better. I also can't get over how they don't use wine glasses for their wine.

Wouldn't define this as a "hot" vibe.

Instead check out Zentan by Thomas Circle.

I disagree. Estadio is so trendy right now. I loved my dinner there.

Ha, it was for the first month it was open. It has lost its fire after so-so reviews. Head to Birch & Barley or Masa 14 instead.

What so-so reviews? Estadio has gotten great reviews here, 3 stars from Washingtonian, and 2.5 on the Post. And it's harder than ever to get in to!

Nothing wrong with Birch & Barley or Masa 14, which are both great, but Estadio is also a gem.

Birch and Barley has some very good food, but it is not great. And I am not sure it is better than overall good. Recent dishes of arctic char tartare, trout, and cavatelli show more hard work and finesse than great skills. This is far from a place I can give a blanket recommendation to.

From what I have seen, Estadio is ALWAYS packed on weekends (I even saw a 2 hour wait on a Thursday). I think that defines it as a hot spot, whether or not you love the food.

          2. re: spinachandchocolate

Haven't been to Estadio yet----what do they use instead of wine glasses? Those stemless glasses?

            1. re: spinachandchocolate

Zentan is also a good choice. The glass noodles with scallops and shrimp is delicious.

          3. Birch and Barley?

            1. So glad you guys are getting a chance for a night out on the town!

A few ideas with great food and a cool vibe: Masa 14, Proof, and Central. I also hear great things about Birch and Barley but personally haven't been yet.

                  1. Thanks to all of you. I really appreciate it.

One last question, some other folks have mentioned Adour. Any thoughts?

I don't think Adour qualifies as very "hip". It's a more formal, old school fine dining place. And I know you said that budget wasn't an issue, but it's also considerably more expensive ($17-25 apps / $35-45 entrees) than the suggestions in this thread.

I agreed with the many 14th street rec's above (Estadio & Masa 14). Cork, I love and is hip, but is more romantic/intimate hip then super trendy (at least in the back). I would also recommend Marvin for a loud, fun place, Central downtown, and the Atlas Room in the H street corridor (great cocktails & food).

I've has so-so experience with food and service at Cork. Sometimes good other times terrible. They use a ton of salt in their food..and I love salt!

                          1. re: J_DC

I think the food and cocktails at the Atlas Room are great, but I've never been when it was buzzing. Does it fill up?

I believe so. The night I was there, we waited almost an hour at the bar.

                        2. I had a hot date (ok, a double date) at Estadio a couple of weeks ago. We got there very early - before it opened - and there were already a few people waiting for the doors to open. We sat at the kitchen bar to watch all the activity. Very lively, good acoustics, definitely an "in" place right now. The food (tapas and tapas-like small plates) was very good, as was the sherry cocktail I tried.

Proof would be good too - as would Masa 14.

                          1. Ceiba; great tequila selection in the bar. I like the food including the whole fish and the ceviche sampler. Lots of eye candy
