London - Chowdown at St John

  • 9

Thanks a heap to limster for organizing this. Chowdown at St John last night was fabulous - best meal I'd had this past couple of weeks on this visit to London!
Stuff we had:
- Dressed crab on toast;
- Roast bone marrow with parsley salad;
- Terrine with pickled gherkins;
- Smoked sprats with pickled red cabbage;
- Veal brisket, potato & arugula salad;
Desserts:
- Brown bread ice-cream;
- Chocolate terrine with toffee ice-cream - that bar of dense, sticky chocolate was the stuff dreams are made of!!
- Eccles cake with Lancashire cheese;
- Baked cheesecake with raisins;
- Buttermilk pudding with shortbread & figs - my fave dessert for the evening!
- Fresh, baked-to-order Madeleines - fab :-)

  1. Looks great! I am in town today and have a reservation on Friday. Thanks for the great report and photos! I can't wait to try myself!

      Sounds good. If you've got a booking for a table in the restaurant proper, then you have access to the full menu (which we didn't, as our bar menu was a concatenated version, comprising mainly starter items from the restaurant menu):

        My wife and I usually go to the bar mainly because its more of a walk-in thing and we sometimes decide at the last moment. The starters and puddings may just be the best part of the menu so thats great.
        The only downside, from talking to one of the people there, is that the reserved diners get preference for any puddings any starters. If they are running low on anything, they will erase it from the bar chalkboard menu.

    2. Wait! You didn't have Welsh rarebit?

        Sounds like a return visit is in order!

      2. Do you know how often that chocolate terrine is on the menu? It doesn't appear to be on today's but it looks fantastic.

          Not sure about that - maybe you need to call ahead & enquire - and reserve first (as some menu items can run out pretty quickly) before you do go.

            they have it quite often (and also at bread + wine) my gf's had it A LOT but yeah if you really want to make sure, you would have to check the menu beforehand or give them a call

        2. The madelines were not on the bar menu that day, but the kitchen was very kind to oblige. Always worth asking.
