Fresh Direct - Previously Frozen Wild Salmon

I'm wondering if anyone has ordered the previously frozen wild salmon, especially the king, from Fresh Direct and how satisfied you were with the quality. Fresh Direct is only giving it 2 1/2 stars so I'm quite hesitant to order.

  1. We've bought it three or four times and it's always been quite good. I made some great salmon burgers with it last week.

    1. I've liked it also. Not as good as never-frozen, but good.

In New York at least, it would be illegal to sell never-frozen salmon for consumption, so you'll need to find a fisherman for that.

Why is that? Not arguing, just don't know the laws. It does appear, from their description, that FreshDirect's farmed hasn't been frozen.

Only salmon that is supposed to be "sushi quality" must be frozen before use to eliminate parasites. Fresh Chinook, and all the other types are always fresh in markets like Citarella or the Lobster Place, etc.

Only fish that is to be consumed raw must be frozen.

Thanks for your replies. I got some of the king salmon last week and found it just fine. For me, it will work as well as ordering from somewhere like VitalChoice which is what I was hoping for.

          3. I have ordered it in the last is okay. Not great but not bad. I know this sounds strange but I have been ever more impressed with's fish. not their frozen fish but their previously frozen fish. I normally shop at Citarella and hesitantly ordered peapod's previously frozen tuna and tilapia. The tuna is literally some of the best I have ever had. Even better than Citarella and much cheaper. You may want to try their salmon. Peapod works just like Fresh Direct and I think that their produce is so much better.

Fascinating. I didn't realize Peapod was now available in NYC. I use to use it in Boston years ago. Thanks for the heads up.
