Hi,

Can anyone suggest a good red wine in the $10-15 range that you know can be purchased at either a Whole Foods, Cost Plus, or Trader Joes?

I am asking on behalf of a friend who is not a drinker and needs to bring a bottle to a dinner party. I can't really help out because I am sojourning in Chicago for the year. I could make suggestions to her but there is no certainty she could easily find those wines in LA without some looking around.

Of particular interest would be a good Malbec or Cotes du Rhone. Thanks!

Neither a cote du rhone or Malbec, but Chateau St. Michelle makes a great $10 cab. Also the 2002 Guenoc Cab for $10 is superb. Both always in stock at Trader Joes.

And my apologies to the chowhound team! This is the first time I've asked a wine question on this message board and I remembered "2-buck chuck debates" from a couple of years ago so assumed it would be OK.

All 3 stores you mention really have VERY limited selection of those wines at those price points. A real wine store would do fine, such as Silver Lake Wine Store or Topline or fill in the blanks of your favorite locally.

E.Guigal makes a good $10 Cote du Rhone. The Coppola Claret always impresses people and you can find that at Trader Joe's or Cost Plus for about $13 (a few bucks more at Whole Foods.)

Cost Plus has it for sure (it's even on their website,) and i have bought it at TJs before, but not for awhile. It is still $10 at the Wine House in WLA.

Folks-

This is a question for the General Topics board, where general discussion of wine, and national retail sources such as Whole Foods, Cost Plust and TJ's are discussed.

Please do not continue the discussion here as we will be removing it as it is not specific to this regional board.

Thanks.
