Seeking Family-Friendly Dining in Capitola

My family is renting a beach house in Capitola for spring break. We have 2 kids (3 and 6) and my husband is vegetarian. We're looking for recommendations for (a) cafes with great pastries and (b) dinner restaurants that are kid-friendly (meaning they are casual and willing to make minor adjustments to menu items) and have multiple vegetarian options. Also, where's the best place to do food shopping and are there any nearby farmers' markets? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

  1. Gayle's Bakery and Rosticerria will be your best bet for great pastries, and I could eat all my meals there, and sometimes do. Beware- it is expensive if you're not careful what you order. Great choices, with LOTS of vegetarian options, for breakfast, lunch & dinner. And you can eat on the patio with the fireplace--very casual and fun for the kids. Even well-mannered dogs are allowed.

Carpos is just on the other side of the freeway on Bay/Porter, and will give you great burgers/salad bars, grilled cheese sandwiches, fish, et.. It has my daughter's favorite vegi-burger in the area.

My grandkids love the esplanade's Pizza My Heart- grab a slice & sit on the benches overlooking the water. And Polar Bear Ice Cream is fun-not great but a perfect topper to a beach day. You probably already know that the weather is really unpredictable this time of year; and be prepared for cold.

We have a nice Whole Foods and New Leaf on 41st Ave., and a really sweet little produce stand across from Gayles, and another one adjacent to Carpos. People swear by the farmers market at Cabrillo every Saturday, but I've never gone since I always work on Saturday. Have fun!
