Suggestions for a pair who love Ouest?

I am giving a gift certifcate to a cousin and his partner as a thank you. They live on the upper west side and really like Ouest. I could get them a certificate there, but I am also interested in opinions on what else they might like if they like Ouest?
Price for dinner up to $300.
Thanks!

  1. A gift certificate from Ouest might not be a bad idea if your friends don't get to dine there often. Afaik, Tom Valenti doesn't have any other restaurants ever since he left Cesca and closed West Branch.

I would think that Ouest fans would also like Minetta Tavern, Blue Ribbon Brasserie, and Craft, maybe even Babbo, since these places are also known for straightforward, unfussy preparations and reasonably hefty portions. It's hard to predict others' tastes, but your friends would probably have enjoyable meals at any of those four.

Blue Ribbon Braserie is a great suggestion. That or Blue Ribbon Bakery are the restaurants most similar to Ouest that I can think of in terms of the type of food (competently made American/French comfort food served in fairly generous portions) and low-key, but classy vibe.

I love Ouest, but not Babbo. At Ouest, the goal is a happy customer. At Babbo, the goal is a happy chef. I have been repeatedly treated rudely at Babbo, never at Ouest.

        Craft is more my speed.

But if they like Ouest, why not Ouest?

        1. Check out Annisa. Or maybe La Silhouette.

Thank you for all of your suggestions! I am looking into all of these. La Silhoutte was further uptown, but the rest were more downtown. I know i didn't specify before, but any suggestions further uptown?

If you're looking for something on the UWS, Telepan is worth considering.

One more vote for Telepan if you're looking more UWS. And I haven't been there in a while, but what about Dovetail?

I was also going to suggest Dovetail -- last meal at Telepan not so hot.

Indeed! Telepan is excellent, and (I think) would appeal to people who like Ouest - good, high quality food, quiet, polite, civilized.

I would second Picholine, but I wonder if they are looking for something more casual.

              2. Thank you all, its been a while, but we ended up going with Babbo and got a response of "we've been wanting to try it for so long now!" Perfect!
