Taking my teenage daughter to SF

Any recommendations for a foodie daughter who is 13?

  1. More info please. Budget. Nature of her foodie tastes and interests, where you will be staying, etc.

Staying in Union Square, but we like to "walk around and explore." She loves dim sum (do you know a good place in Chinatown, which is near where we will be staying?), pasta...really anything except burgers. In nyc, Fatty Crab is one of her favorites.

      1. re: cettlinger

For dim sum I'd suggest Dol Ho, which is a cozy little diveon the northwest edge of Chinatown with very good cheap, plain dim sum. I think your daughter would get a kick out of it. From Union Square I would suggest walking through the Chinatown gate and up Grant to Sacramento, turn up hill and wander through a couple of the alleys going off to your right and at some point turn uphill again up to Stockton, which is the real "working" Chinatown.

I also had a lot of fun the other day doing a crawl on the Embarcadero: Tcho chocolate factory (tours twice a day, reservations strongly suggested), then the Ferry Building.

    2. Some suggestions for a teenager staying in Union Square from LA (I assume from your profile):
Golden Gate Bakery for egg tarts
Liguria in North Beach for foccacia
      Ferry Building on Saturday
      Dosa on Fillmore
Bi-rite and Humphrey Slocombe for ice cream

If she likes Fatty Crab, she might try Mission Street Chinese in the Mission, Out the Door in Union Square, Heaven's Dog near 7th and Market, Betelnut, Penang Garden in Chinatown.

Suggestions for dim sum (limited to SF only): Cityview (Chinatown), Yank Sing (near Embarcadero), Hong Kong Lounge (Richmond), Ton Kiang (Richmond), South Sea (Sunset)

      1. If you're blessed with a sunny warm day, take in lunch on Belden Alley. I like Plouf but there are plenty of choices for al fresco dining. For dinner, Gitane has a very cool, urbane vibe.

        1. I'm just absolutely loving Perbacco and nopa at the moment. I think Perbacco offers just about the best Northern Italian food in the U.S. in a comfortable environment; and your daughter might be really impressed with nopa where world-class CA cuisine is served in a truly casual environment.

The environments at both places are likely to suite your daughter, but nopa especially might be something she loves.

          1. A lovely lunch to be had is at Cafe Claude. Deliscious croquet monsieur and fritte in a cozy French bistro .

            1. Places I'd have liked when I was 13: dim sum (maybe City View), Miette Confisserie or Candy Store, Mr and Mrs. Miscellaneous or Delise for ice cream; somewhere for hot chocolate, Off the Grid or one of the other food cart events; Pauline's Pizza or Tony's or Piccino; Chile Lindo for a takeout empanada or the Tanguito truck for more empanadas. Cafe Zitouna for bastilla, couscous, and lemonade.

Any of the farmers' markets is fun because they encourage tasting.

              1. re: Windy

Regrettably, Mr and Mrs Miscellaneous is not central to the tourist, and I'm not sure it's worth finding and getting on the T muni or waiting for the 22 Filmore. I would have liked HS, personally, but boys might go for the weird flavor effect more than girls.

              2. Golden West for breakfast...

                1. I definitely agree with a previous poster that wandering the Ferry Building would be a great idea, followed by a meal at Slanted Door. Also, check out Yank Sing for dim sum

                  1. re: loveballet101

THANK YOU to everyone. We are leaving tomorrow and I have a long list now!

                  2. Mission: Limon rotisserie followed by bi-rite. I think the Peruvian scene is completely different from LA and limon is priced right. Nice walk in between your meal and dessert.

Fillmore: Second the suggestion above for Dosa on Fillmore. I think it will also make a nice walk along fillmore to see the little cafes and you can do a nice stroll to Japantown (our “Little Tokyo”; I can’t remember which one is bigger/more interesting). Get some mochis, crepes or takoyaki.

North beach/Wharf: If you’re walking up towards Fisherman’s wharf, going through North Beach – I’d recommend the House or Tony’s Pizza. The house is little asian fusion restaurant with pretty good food (more along the Chinese/Japanese vein). Tony’s pizza is lively, has many different pizza ovens, well priced – just a fun atmosphere. Also if you end up in fisherman’s wharf, I do think teens love sitting in Boudin’s, watching the sourdough breads bake in different shapes and eating clam chowder in the cold.

My chinatown dim sum preference is Great Eastern.
