Cocktail Bar Saturday Night, Coffee Shop Sunday Morning...Portland

Matt H Mar 22, 2011 08:30 AM

My wife and I are heading up for a quick weekend in Portland from Boston and have all the bases covered except a cocktail bar pre-hugo's (8:30 reservation) and coffee and a pastry for Sunday morning near our hotel.

We are staying at the Portland Harbor Hotel, is there anything for a great cup walking distance?

Otherwise here is our itinerary, let me know if there are any glaring errors.

Saturday Lunch: Duckfat

Saturday Pre Dinner Cocktails: ???

Saturday Dinner: Hugo's

Sunday Morning Coffee/Pastry: ??

Sunday Brunch: 555

Thanks!

The place for Sunday morning pastries is Standard Baking Co., down on the other end of Commercial St. (in the back of the Hilton Garden Inn's parking lot.) They have coffee, and I'm sure it's fine, but they have the best scones and cinnamon buns in town.

Ditto; nothing else in the same league.

Pre-dinner cocktails, walking distance from Hugo's, include the Armory Lounge (inside Regency Hotel) and Old Port Sea Grill. Enjoy.

Thanks everyone. Standard Baking Co. and Armory Lounge look perfect. Will report back after the weekend.

Matt - I find everything in Portland eminently within walking distance...We are going this weekend, too, to catch Jeff Tweedy at the State Theater. Standard Baking is wonderful. Try the Portuguese fougasse for something savory. Arabica Coffee is also a sweet spot.

There are so many fun drinking places in Portland, tough to recommend one. Hard to wrong! Enjoy!

You're right next to Paciarino in the hotel. Perhaps a few peeks in will make you change your mind for a saturday lunch spot.

You could try to go to Walter's across the street from you for a cocktail. Probably super busy but it's right there so you could check real quick. Armory and Standard are good choices though.

Interesting, just checked out the site and I will definitely take a peek in. At the very least check out the Store. Thanks.

John Meyer is a bartender of national reputation at the Grill Room. The space at Grace is pretty special. I'd ditto Hugo's bar. Sonny's always has a social scene that fun. If it's cosy you want, the leather furniture and gas fireplace at DiMillo's will please.
            Cheers!
