Hi - does anyone know where to find wholemeal flour used to make Irish brown bread, such as they have at The Field? Or where that kind of bread may be found in SD (retail, not at a restaurant)? I've checked all the usual places, Whole Foods, Henry's, Bristol Farms. Only place I've found it in the past was an Irish shop down on 5th, but I think they're out of business. I'm interested in the kind used for Brown bread which has like, 4 ingredients, such as here: http://www.chow.com/food-news/2369/a-... . (In La Jolla, Clairemont would be best, but I'm asking about anyplace in San Diego.)

You might try asking Village Mill in Del Mar. They mill their own flour.

I make several bread recipes that called for wholemeal flour, and when I googled the stuff it seems like it is just the UK term for "whole wheat" flour.

So head on down to Henry's or wherever and get some King Arthur whole wheat and make that recipe.

Is that the same thing as "wheaten meal?"
I have a handwritten recipe somewhere that we got when my parents and I stayed with a family in Derry 20+ years ago. Each morning they'd serve it to us for breakfast with strawberry jam and I swear I could have lived on just that. Man that stuff was good, but trying to make it here with whole wheat flour I never got it right, I think.

Thanks for the replies. Wheaten meal, yeah, that's probably nearly the same thing, is mentioned here: http://www.motherlindas.com/irish_soda_bread.htm .

I did find a bakery in PB, on Garnet called "Sugar and Scribe", which is Irish owned, should carry brown bread, I will have to check it out...

(and the whole meal, or wheaten meal, is coarser than general whole wheat. I have found Odlums brand wholemeal flour in the past, there is a difference. I may have to order it online: http://www.foodireland.com/Merchant2/... )
