woody's burgers bar and grill in etobicoke ...

I have been quite impressed with my last few visits to this place so I thought i'd give them some love on here. It's turning into my fav Burger place in Etobicoke (kind of sick of Apache, i'm done with Magoo's, not overly impressed with GBC).

It's at Brownsline + Lakeshore. The burgers are really tasty and they are made over a wood burning grill. Sweet potato fries are good too. Haven't tried a pulled pork sandwich yet.

I still have to try Organig Big Burger which is just up the street, I hear they make a good burger as well.

  1. I've been wondering about his place.

I think Duckman posted something on here a while back too. I think he said it was pretty goood.

It is good! Although they have to prop their door open in ALL types of weather because the place looks and smells like a burning forest due to the wood burning grill.. So on all my visits it was either freezing cold or sweltering hot.

Great spot for takeout though I agree

Avoid the pulled pork, they put it on an olive oil/rosemary ciabatta bread (wtf?) and it's stewed, not smoked. Very, very bland. Poutine sucks. I stick to the 50/50 which is 50% regular fries and 50% sweet potato

You hit the mark there. If it's busy, you'll have that 'just spent the weekend camping' scent right through to the core. That being said, when the burgers are good, they are very, very good. Worth the campfire essence. I have had one dry burger there, out of a dozen or so trips. It was a sad day indeed.

    2. It is good! I bought a voucher for it at some point and went with a friend before a movie at Queensway one time. Unfortunately we were running late so had to eat it really quick and didn't get to fully "enjoy" it but we had the bison burgers, and shared an order of fries.

      1. Yea, I had this last summer as well. Good service. Friendly owner. Food was decent. I wouldn't consider it a destination burger place, but definitely a good choice when in the area.

Woody is the name of their wood burning grill btw haha.

        1. Go for the burgers & fries. If you want a pulled pork sandwich go to Paul & Sandys-same price range but a world of difference.

          1. Having only been there once, this may not be a true reflection of how they cook their burgers, but it was extremely dry. The size of the patty was perfect, but I had trouble finishing mine it was so dry - probably one of the driest hamburgers I've ever eaten! It's hard for me to ever go back.

Squirms - I found Organic BB much juicer and tastier. However, they seem to have stocking issues with their ice-creams - they didn't have 3 flavours!

I've been curious about Organic Big Bite but never heard any first hand feedback... So it's good you say?

The burgers are fresh not frozen?

              1. re: duckdown

Some are fresh, some are frozen, I just can't remember which ones (they have bison, organic and grass fed). Also some are grilled and others are flame broiled.

            2. I've been twice. The first time I had their pulled pork while my husband had the bison burger. As soon as i unwrapped my pulled pork, I was envious of my husband. The pulled pork was boring and tasteless while his burger was juicy and delicious. We went back the second time and I did it right...got the bison. It was great. Their burgers are nice and thick and very filling so splitting the fries between the two of us was perfect! haven't tried their sweet potato fries yet, but we're going again soon!

And i completely agree with terrycar. If you want a good pulled pork, go to Paul and Sandy's on Dundas. Great smokey flavour. Though their 'hot' BBQ sauce is completely mild.

Agreed. Had the pulled pork first time, it was pretty blah. Next time got the California, and it was good stuff. Next time, I'm getting the Coronary.

                Fifty-Fifty Fries!

              2. I had the worst experience at Woody's today over my lunch hour. We showed up at about 12:30, we were a party of four. It took 30 minutes for three of us to be served, which is ridiculous for burgers and fries IMO. After 45 minutes MY lunch still had not arrived, and at this point I was due back at work. Everyone in my group commented to me how it was incredibly rude that nobody from the staff tried even acknowledged that they had completely forgeotten about my order, or try to rectify the situation after I brought it to their attention TWICE! They even gave me a pager!! Upon my request due to sheer frustration, the cashier refunded my money and we went on our merry way. I am completely flabbergasted at the lack of customer service at this restaurant. They could have made me a happy customer by buying my lunch or even giving me a coupon to come back for a burger on the house. But no, nothing.

I recommend anyone who values good service to avoid this establishment at all costs. There are simply too many burger joints in this city to risk wasting your time with this one.

                1. Finally went to Woody's on a Friday evening around 7 pm. Crowded but not too long of a wait because I ordered pulled pork and made-in-house 50/50 fries, instead of a burger which is advertised to take 20 minutes to cook. I immediately went home and pulled out the food - to discover that everything had already become soggy. The fries were in a closed box, so became soft. The bun on the Smokehouse pulled pork sandwich was so mushy and moist that I couldn't tell until halfway through eating it that it was actually two sandwiches stacked on top of each other (presumably cut in half and then stacked before wrapping).
This is a serious problem -- don't ever get takeout at Woody's!

The smokehouse pulled pork was pretty mediocre, too.

I posted about the pulled pork back when the place first opened! Could have avoided disaster if you read my comments :(

                    1. re: duckdown

True enough - but I was spontaneously trying to save time by not getting the burger - had actually been heading to Burrito Boyz but got swayed by the crowd at Woody's.
The bun is now just a plain white soft bun that gets gummy when steamy.

                  2. Woody's burger is seriously terrible. What's the appeal? I got a "stuffed" cheddar burger. Two awful patties.

Next time head up the street to Organic Big Burger, 602 Brown's Line and check 'em out

                      1. re: 5andman

Sandman sadly Organic Big Burger has been sold, some time ago. I have been in the new place twice and they sell just beef and potato fries, I don't eat either, so I know nothing of the quality. Also, they don't keep the same hours as OBB did.

                        1. re: Pastryrocks

Yeah, the new place is called OBQ burgers, and it's pretty middling (meatloaf burgers, mediocre quality beef, etc.)

                      2. re: Food Tourist

They used to be good. Now the burgers are just plain bad IMO. The texture is off. They don't taste like fresh ground, fresh made like they used too. Boo!
