MashAllah - New on Coney Island Avenue

  • 1

Getting intense with Coney Island Avenue Paki-Bangla grills and sweet shops lately, especially between Avenue C and Cortelyou...if the grand opening last week of MashAllah is any indication, the best is yet to come.

After eyeballing the lunchtime snacks and steamtable fare, settled on an order of chicken tikka pieces, about six or seven sizable chunks for $4.00. Outstanding! The chicken was expertly tandoor-grilled and coated with a just-light enough spicy masala, tender as ever I've had. All MashAllah's items looked winning, including freshly-made kababs, chapli, chicken tikka masala (saucy type), daal and samosas. A salad and freebie gulab jamun ball were throw in for good measure by the friendly staff.

Another impending opening two doors down (Mazudar?), together with Shandar, Punjub and Madina and the Gyro place closer to Beverley Road make this now highly-competitive segment of CIA a wall-to-wall flavor sensation alley. A quick 5:30 AM stop into Madina yielded some classic saucy channa and a good view of the crowd watching the Cricket World Cup.

With the right walking shoes on, you can cut a path all the way down to Avenue H, with more stops at Bukhara, Bukhari and Pakiza. Do I hear "Kabab Crawl"?

  1. Good to know about. Three of us hit MashAllah a couple weekends ago and shared an $18 feast. The steam-table stuff - chana, bhindi, aloo gobi - was fresher than the norm. Could've used more heat, but flavors were good. Chapli kabab was moist and nicely seasoned. Naan was fine, made to order. The only miss was aloo tikki, well spiced but way too salty.

I agree this is a good nabe to explore. What do you like at the other places?
