Joe's on Abbott Kinney? Still good or is there something else w/ of 405 - same price range?

isofood Mar 20, 2011 08:10 PM

The title says it all, Chowhounds.

Dinner, weekday, w/ my husband.

Okay, anniversary dinner, but we're not doing over-the-top, so, not Melisse, for instance.

Just want the food to taste good and don't want ear-splitting 'ambiance' - Upper West, for instance, was a PITA for making us wait 30 mins even w/ a reservation, on a school night, and was pretty noisy.

Oh: Not a big fan of tapas-style food, either. Does that rule out the new Cachette?

Any thoughts?

Thank you all, as ever.

Really? I didn't know any MdR places were in fact tasty. I thought it was all about the view, no? I'll look into it, thank you.

        Any other thoughts?

          Wilshire? Josie?

Josie is a great suggestion. Tasting Kitchen, at the other end of Abbott Kinney, or JiRaffe might work as well. The Chef at Wilshire is leaving this month to open his own place in Santa Monica so I hesitate to endorse Wilshire only for that reason.

Yet both Wilshire & Jiraffe get quite noisy when operating at nearly full house standards, but then so does Joe's at times.

since it's a special occasion, you might want to ask them to seat you at a table that let's you both sit on the same side so you can get a little cuddle action in while you are waiting for your truffle pizza starter to arrive. . . .

                  Hi Westsidegal,

Thanks for the info, but what restaurant does it pertain to?

                      cafe del rey.
                      they are very accommodating.
will not force you to accept a table for two if you request a larger one and they they have a larger one available .

While I liked the food at Gjelina, it's tapas-style (IMO) and pretty noisy... and DARK.

I was just at Joe's for brunch yesterday, and was reminded how much I love their main dining room. My starter was the fennel and leek soup, which was awesome, and then I had the huevos rancheros, which were good (but not great). Service was excellent. I prefer the food at Gjelina, but I have to say, Joe's is definitely an easier experience.

Agree with some of the others, westside + excellent food + quiet atmosphere = Josie.
You might also try Jiraffe, IF you request to sit upstairs where it is quieter. Actually, I've never been there on a weekday, perhaps the main floor is quiet as well.
I really like Joe's for brunch, which is a great deal, but for dinner I feel like there are better places at a similar price point (like Josie, Jiraffe, etc.).

I went to Joe's recently. I think the food is still wonderful. My husband had one of the most delicious steaks I have ever tasted on our last visit. The food is prepared so thoughtfuly, and the presentation is always so special. They have a great wine list, and an excellent staff. It's a great choice.

I also love Fig in the Fairmont Hotel. The chef is very creative, and always lists what produce is almost out of season, at the peak of it's season and coming into season at the bottom of the menu. The ambiance is wonderful. I always feel like I'm on vacation when I go there.

Went to Joe's twice in the last month for lunch after two years without having been there. Everything exceeded my expectations. Actually every time I go there I wonder why I don't go there for dinner more often. The food was great and the dining room is very pleasant. I would much rather go to Joe's for a romantic anniversary dinner than go to Gjelina.
