Bowen's Island Charleston
I have heard mixed reviews ranging from the best to the worst, particularly after the fire. I will be in the area in the next few weeks. Is it worthwhile? And if it is not what is for a similar type experience. I know the rest of the Charleston restaurant scene so am focusing on oyster roasts.

Thanks Sue and Mickey. We went there Tuesday night and had the best time. The oysters were wonderfull and so was the fried seafood. Since it truly is a shack, I think that accounst for lots of the mixed reviews - likely from tourists who don't understand that those types of shacks in the South are all about the food. I can see where some moight find the atmosphere intimidating - we found it wonderful. so thanks again for putting my unease at rest!

I have enjoyed Bowen's every time I've been. The oysters are always delicious and the atmosphere is fun. If you've never been you should go just to see what you think.
Also many area charities host oyster roasts as fundraisers, and we always go. Here's one that I',m attending:

Sometimes I think people have expectations that just don't match the reality. With a place like Bowen's you have to "get it". Bowen's is not fancy, and it has an interesting order process. If you love oysters and enjoy experiences that are out of your norm, then go and enjoy.
Pick up a City Paper when you get here. It may have other oyster roasts that, what with work and all, I might have missed. Have a great time. And lucky you to have a loved one on the Edge of America!
