cooking apps for the I Pad
I will be getting an I Pad soon, and was wondering if any of the cooking apps are worth installing
(and the purchase price, of course).
Thoughts? Suggestions as to which ones are great?
I'll never get rid of my cookbooks, just wondering if any apps would complement them.
Thanks, guys, Sweetpotato
(answering from my iPad) I did get the epicurious free app. It's nice, but the fact that you can surf the web from your iPad makes it more flexible, and I just go to the site or just google for recipes.
What I use most is my OWN recipe collections on the iPad. I downloaded them in PDF form into my iBook library. This is great both in the kitchen and out grocery shopping like L Nightshade mentioned. I also bought the ebook version of a couple of my fav cookbooks that were available. I also use iDisk to share a bunch more recipes that I uploaded from my laptop.
So - I'm not sure you'll really need any apps.
Not an app, but I take my ipad when I go food shopping. For example, if I'm going to the fish market, I'll bring up my EYB library, select the books marked for COTM, narrow it to fish entrees, and bring up all the recipes. The page is static, so even if you don't have an internet connection (mine currently only has wifi, not cell service) the list stays on your screen. When I see which fish is in at the fishmonger, I look at the recipes, choose one, and all the needed ingredients are listed. Of course, if you have the cell connection you can browse anything.
I use the epicurious app, the interface is pretty much like the website, but it's handy because you can choose several recipes and it will make a grocery list for all your ingredients. I have the Gourmet app also, with articles, videos, etc. Nice to have since we don't have the magazine any longer.
This is a great question sweetpotato, let's hope folks have some suggestions.
I purchased an ipad in December and haven't added many apps as yet but since you mentioned cookbooks, I was wondering if you're an Eat Your Books member. While they don't have an app as yet, I've found it incredibly useful to use my ipad to call up EYB while I'm shopping and to check if I already own a book. I don't know how many times I'd seen a sale in the past but just not been sure whether or not I had the book already. The other think I like to check is to see how many other folks own it and whether they've reviewed it. If it's indexed that's additional incentive for me to buy the book.
Thanks for posting this question.
