I'm curious after hearing about this place from a friend -- Thai Orchids on Park Ave in Cranston (in a strip mall, apparently, a tiny place). Has anyone tried it and how would you rate it compared to some of the other local Thai options? I found some high reviews of this place elsewhere online but nothing on chowhound.

AND -- more importantly, perhaps -- what would you suggest from the menu? thanks!

In terms of Thai that I myself have sampled --- I've been to Rim Nahm in Pawtuxet Village, Cranston (meh, not thrilling, and seemed pricey/uninspired for what we got), both Apsara locations (yummy, and I prefer the south Prov location), and for "Asian bistros" both Galaxie on Reservoir, Cranston and Lemongrass on Post Road, Warwick, both of which I enjoy although I usually order Vietnamese there, either bee bong or banh soong). Am I missing any fantastic places in/around Providence?

I've been to Thai Orchid numerous times over the years and always enjoyed it. It's actually in a small store front, not a strip mall, but it is tiny--about four tables total. But the people who run it are great and the food has always been wonderful. I can't really compare it to other places in Cranston, not having been to them, but I'd rank it among the better Thai places I've been to around the area. As for recommendations, I can't say that anything I've had there has been a disappointment. That said, I've known people to enjoy the Siam Duck, I think the Thai Noodle Soup is terrific (and a great deal), and the pad thai and house fried rice are always excellent. It's really a great little place. I wish I lived closer, I'd go all the time.

I love the Thai Orchid! I agree with jgl that the owners are absolutely lovely. Everything that I have tried there has been enjoyable, but I keep going back for the country style pad thai and the Tamarind Duck. YUM.

I was smitten with Rim Nahm when it first opened because I lived a short walk away, but in general I remember it being only ok. I haven't been in a few years, so I can't speak of any recent experiences there.

Thai Star on Chalkstone in Providence is our favorite Thai in the area. Love the steamed Thai dumplings, curries, tamarind duck, chaokoh chicken, hot basil fried rice, and any of the noodle dishes. Really, we've never had a bad meal here.

thanks, LMWW! I look forward to checking it out. :-) Always excited to find new spots to explore! What would be your favorite of the noodle dishes?

Didn't make it to Thai Orchids yet either, because we ended up at Thai Excursion at 1565 Post Road, Warwick (near the airport). I was really impressed. My Myanmar curry delighted me -- deep red, bold flavors, noodles, chicken, mushrooms. Mmmmm. My friends both went with country pad thai, and both were extremely pleased. We will return there and --soon--; the soft pretty lights and gentle ambiance added a special touch too. Oh, and we ordered great crispy calamari in a tasty dipping sauce for starters!

You're really going to force me to choose?!

If I had to choose, I'd say that the pad kee mao is the way to go. But really, that is only a slight edge (and perhaps reflects my personal preference for spicy vs. something sweet like pad thai)

The owner is such a sweetheart, too. Big thumbs up for Thai Star.

Unfortunately, there is no go to thai place in town. Some things at rim nahm are very good (ped cho chee, laab), siam square (crispy duck), and thai star (various dishes). I have always found thai orchid to be better for take out

Just made it back into Thai Orchid last night. Food and owners were awesome as always.
I love the country Pad Thai and spicy basil fried rice.
The place is BYOB and there is a Package Store across the street if you forget to bring something from home.
