Fig & Olive - has anyone been?

Am interested to hear if anyone has been to the new Fig & Olive on Melrose. How was it? Would love to hear!

Had dinner there last Sat. Made reservations Friday afternoon and was only able to get 6:30. When we arrived they tried to seat us in the rear corner and we asked for a better table. The hostess was very accomadating and we were moved to a very nice table in the front. The vibe was great and the service excellent. I had the special truffle mushroom soup and the lamb chops; both very good. The waiter felt the food was a bit slow coming that he brought a round of complementary drinks. We were having such a nice time, we had not noticed the time. In any event, we were completely un-rushed - even though it was packed. We spent 3 hourss eating, drinking and having a great time. The couple next to us was very nice and we shared menu suggestions. All in all an excellent experience and for what it is, reasonable prices.

Their rosemary lamb chops smoked a la minute are pretty amazing

Had dinner there in November. Was fun, vibe great, waiter very attentive. Branzino delicious, carrot soup excellent, apple tart, lovely, wine choices ok. Dining companion had the ravioli...pasta is not their forte. Overall, really nice.

Tried to go back there for our firm holiday party, but they would not allow kosher meals to be brought in. We had our firm holiday dinner again at Spago. Spago has a small kosher kitchen, but they allowed meals to be brought in from favored kosher restaurants, anyway. Fig & Oilve said it was against the law.

Just went last night for my dtr's birthday dinner: wonderful dining experience! Everyone friendly and gracious from the beginning to end! No one tried to sell us olive oil or push certain plates, service was fabulous, all wait staff efficient, quick and polite. Crostinis were really delicious, fig tart and tuna tartar outstanding along with the beef carpaccio. My lamb chops and my dtr's steak were perfectly cooked medium rare. My husband's striped sea bass in papillote was fragrant and delicious. Fun, energetic atmosphere! We were all very pleased and will definitely go back!

This a winner in my book. All the food was excellent. Our waitress was great.

Bartending--not so much. The bartenders were stupid and rude. They knew nothing about anything, and, worse, were ignorant of their ignorance and seemed to delight in ridiculing the customers (myself included) for not sharing in their juvenile understanding of their craft or their personal tastes.

More details sushigirlie! This sounds like it would be interesting with some specifics.

I had a good recommendation from a serious French chef that the places was fun and the food was good. I went last week - I liked the starters I'd had (shrimp and branzino ceviche, beef carpaccio) but I thought the sole papillote was a little bland (but people on both sides of me had great things to say about it). Young, stylish scene. Fun and hopping.

We've had the sole papillote twice, and loved it. The special olive oil served with the dish made it for us!

My husband and I love their food. He was there 2 weeks after its opening and loved it. I finally had a chance to go about 3 weeks ago and I tried all the Crostini, Ceviche & Tartar. Our favorites were "Mushroom, Truffled Artichoke, Parmesan", "Manchego, Fig, Marcona Almond", and "Salmon Ceviche with Orange, Grapefruit, Lemon, Cilantro"

Unfortunately, the service was horrible. We ordered a bottle of red wine and one person ordered a glass of white. The food came before the bottle, and a glass of wine did not arrive until we finished the appetizer. There was a very long wait after appetizer until the entrees were served. Our wait staff did not apologize for the wine delay, and she only checked back with us immediately after the food was served. Also, I had to flag busboy/busgirl to refill the water glass 4 times since our waitress rarely came by.

My husband is usually quiet about making a complaint to the management (unlike me), but this time even he had to talk to the concierge as we were leaving.

Would I go back? Probably yes for the food, but I am reluctant because of the experience.

I had a very, very good meal with 6 friends there. It is flashy and trendy with a beautiful, well-healed crowd -- attributes that often get a restaurant a hefty dose of reverse-snobbism around chowhound -- but the food is quite excellent, IMHO.

When I went, the food was fine but the host stand employees were so effing rude that it really colored my experience. They were like a stereotype of LA servers that I'd never actually encountered in real life. Our waiter was sweet, though.

Strange. We've been twice and thought the gals at the host stand were very polite, and our servers were great. Love the food...it's simple but very well executed Mediterranean cuisine.

I went as part of a party of 4 and was, honestly, surprised. It not exactly a chain but part of a large outfit and I figured it would feel, if not corporate, at least formulaic. It didn't. The place is loud and also, I think, too dark. We ate in the atrium which was quieter but also felt a little out of the action. The food was very good, fresh, made with care. Everybody was happy with their food and one of us is so fussy she can be a real pain. Her quote - "Some of the best lamb chops I have ever had." Enjoy several of the appetizers -the zucchini carpaccio is fantastic. One thing I didn't love was the branzino - the preparation is too heavy for the fish IMHO but overall I would certainly go back and can recommend it without hesitation.

Returned to F&O for a second time tonight, and again everything was great. Menu is interesting, all food was well prepared, service was good, restaurant is very attractive. It's a real find. Only minuses are that it's pretty pricey (menu doesn't look expensive, but things add up quickly), and it's really loud...suggest the rear atrium dining room which is less noisy.

I am the op and we had dinner tonight at Fig & Olive and loved it! Everything was terrific...food, service and ambiance. It is a very attractive restaurant with a contemporary gardeny Mediterranean ambiance. It has a very bright open feel, with trees, candles, and nice wall art. The surfaces are all hard, so it can be somewhat noisy, but tolerably so. We had a wonderful young lady waiting on us...she was very warm and friendly, but more importantly she was very knowledgeable about the food and wine, and efficient in her service.

We enjoyed the food & drink very much. We started with assorted crostini and a dish of olives to accompany our drinks. These were great, and were accompanied by a very nice focaccia which came with three different olive oils, which were explained to us. We then shared three appetizers, the zucchini carpaccio, the fig, serrano ham and goat cheese plate, and a caesar salad. All were delicious. Two of us had the sole en papillote (with zucchini, fennel, lemon, rosemary) and accompanied by mashed potatoes. This was served with a small flask of wonderful olive oil to drizzle over. One person had the filet mignon which he said was "perfect". We shared a dessert "sandwich" of wonderful sweetened marscapone on a sweet brioche "bun" accompanied by strawberries in a sauce...I think it was lemony.

All in all, everything was terrific, and we will surely return. The menu is really interesting...perfectly balanced between interesting small plates for those who would like a drink or glass of wine and want to "graze", and larger plates for those who want a more traditional meal.

The restaurant was packed...on a Sunday night! It's justifiably off to a good start!

Here is what a friend of mine had to say after she went.

"Atmosphere: very French provincial (fig trees, cozy banquetts, park like atmosphere, interesting bar space) A
Food: I had the lamb, my friend had the paella. B- (nothing really stood out)
Service: still figuring it out. I had a martini spilled on me at the bar. C (I’ve heard other people have had terrible service)

Net net, the cheese platter is terrific and its an interesting wine/cocktail list and a really fun atmosphere. Grab a friend and go sit at the bar for drinks and nibbles and you’ll get the best of what this place has to offer."
