BBQ near FT Sam Houston or Lackland Air Force Base

I am going to be visiting San Antonio in a few weeks and I wanted to get a heads up on where to go for good BBQ. I will be around the FT Sam Houston and Lackland Air Force Base areas and will have a car.

Thank you for any advice!

  1. Don't know what's out by Lackland. On South W.W.White Road, is Gonzales Meat Market, which is from the town of Gonzales, and has bbq. There is also Mr.and Mrs.G's Kitchen, which has good reviews. You can check out Urbanspoon or Yelp or Yahoo Local if no one here can help you. There is I think a bbq place on St.Mary's street over by St.Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church and Our Lady of Sorrows, but can't remember the name. There was one on Broadway down by the old Butterkrust Bakery that may still be there, but the name escapes me.
If you have time, you can drive out to Luling to City Market which is off of Interstate 10 ,you just take US Hwy 90 East to go to the town. There is also Lockhart, which has Black's and Smitty's.I haven't tried Kreuz's yet. These all have websites and it's not that far from San Antonio.
You might see if San Antonio Magazine has a website. They have an article about new places in San Antonio, and may list some bbq places. I think there is also a Grady's BBQ on the acess road near Fort Sam.You may want to check out their website for that location.Don't know if that helps out.

I saw on Yelp Bob's BBQ on FM78 out in Kirby, which isn't too far from Fort Sam to go to.

    2. Without heading to Austin, the best BBQ by far in the San Antonio area is at Harmon's in Cibolo, just outside the Randolph AFB area. It easily meets or surpasses that available in Lockhart, and maybe comes in a close second to Franklin's BBQ in Austin for the absolute best in the state. You'll thank me later.
