Joan's on Third

My wife and I just returned from a week in L.A. At a friend's suggestion, we had lunch at Joan's on Third. I had what I have to say was the best Chinese chicken salad I've ever had (in my admittedly limited experience w/Chinese chicken salad). We were starving; it hit the spot. A great find for us.

Unfortunately, the cookbook store across the street was closed for the holidays, but we'll try it again on the next trip.

Thanks, Joan!

  1. I had the awesome apricot ham and brie sandwich from there today too! My favorite sandwich! =) Well this and the salami one from Larchmont Wine and Spirits.

    1. Thought this place was closing? Did they change their minds?

Maybe you're thinking of their outpost at the Hammer Museum. The original location on Third is alive and well and making plenty of money off of well-heeled yuppies and moviestars.

I drove past Joan's this morning and I thought I saw a sign that said they were "Growing" (as in expanding in size) but maybe that could be a place right next door. Anyway, Joan's was open.

            It's been replaced by Clementine

        2. Joan's is slated to triple it's size by early spring!!! I've heard that they are adding a full breakfast menu, beer & wine and some hot dinner dishes. I can't wait! I love Joan's on Third.

          1. Just went there for some cheese the other day and stayed for a turkey meatloaf sandwich. Great restaurant, FANTASTIC cheese. We had a raw milk bleu cheese from France and a cheese not entirely unlike a super-brie, so intense in flavor. We ate it at room temperature with some fig jam and a bottle of merlot from tj's (yeah yeah, all you Sideways junkies, be quiet about the merlot!! It was good... besides the merlot was selected by a visiting French friend whose father is a winemaker! No nyah!) Interestingly we decided to do a side-by-side with charles shaw's merlot and I must say that shaw tasted like vinegar by comparison. It burned the back of your throat as it went down. Our French friend refused to touch it after smelling my glass.

Incidentally, I always laugh when I see Chinese chicken salad on the menu... my Lovely Tasting Assistant (LTA) is Taiwanese, and as such has an aversion to raw vegetables (they're really not a part of the chinese diet) and therefore laughs every time she sees the name "Chinese chicken salad" on a menu. (It would be akin to finding an "American hamburger" in Taiwan which is made with stinky tofu.) However if Joans makes it, I don't doubt it's tasty!
