Going to Malatesta tonight. I had been there once before and didn't love it, but maybe I ordered wrong.
I know it's a favorite of many here - anyone have any recs?
Thanks!

I love the gnocchi with red sauce, get it almost every time.

        Crap - that's what I had that I didn't love last time.

how did it go?...(i think i read this too late to chime in before your dinner)...

i love the rigatoni w/ sausage (a sometime pasta special)...i like the lamb chops...grilled squid salad is solid...spaghetti chitarra is popular too...i think Malatesta has great charm, nice location for pre/post-dinner walks by the river, and solid food that's very very reasonably priced...has the food ever wowed me?...probably not, but the overall experience of dinners there has been consistently outstanding

            It was better this time.
Unfortunately, I gave the gnocchi another shot, and it was as uninteresting as it was last time. The spaghetti chitarra, however, was quite good as was the orechiette with sausage and broccoli rabe.
Simon, I think you nailed it. It's charming, decently-priced, and a nice location. And the food is solid.

A large group of us were at Malatesta on Friday night. The gnocchi was extremely bland and uninspiring. The steak, however, was delicious and perfectly cooked. The other dishes we ordered were not memorable. The service was excellent (although they were pretty cheap with the bread) and the atmosphere was quite nice. I don't think I would return as I prefer my food to have a lot of flavour.

Fair enough. I love Malatesta but mainly for a) the charm of rustic casual place near the Hudson, b) the absurdly reasonable prices c) the fact that the overwhelming majority of beautiful women in NYC find it to be a sublime place for a casual date...foodwise, i'm with you: i like it fine but solo or with a pal, i'd eat elsewhere...yet for casual dates, cheapo bday groups, etc, its awesome :)
