Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in the SF Bay Area (including Berkeley, Oakland, Napa, Sonoma, Marin, and San Jose)

First time to SF - dining suggestions?

Greetings! we are in town first week of April. Looking for recommendations walking distance from Intercontinental Hotel 880 Howard. Affordable, fun and friendly are our criteria. Already booked into Zuzu in Napa and FishWife in Monterey. Trying to fill in the blanks in between! Thanks!!!!

  1. Since the whole city is only six miles from end-to-end, walking distance is relative...

And the whole town is fun and friendly.

Budget and food style preferences would be helpful -- and, I suppose, how far you are willing to walk. I'm one of those that will walk for an hour while others don't want to walk more than five minutes.

That said, my preferences would be (in order of preference): Thermidor, Ame, Anchor & Hope, and Ducca.

    1. Perbacco. A bit of a hike, but not more than a mile or so. I hear good things about 54 Mint. I haven't been to Fringale since the chef changed but it used to be excellent. Ame is fairly expensive but worth it; one of the best restaurants in the city and a "only in SF" type place.
